Do games bottleneck or is it graphics?

Just wondering if game servers can sometimes be the bottleneck or is it me lol?

Playing guild wars 2 World vs World 200+ players on screen at a time.

CPU 4770k 4.6ghz never goes over 60%

GPU 760 SC 1280 mhz

With less then 10 players on screen I get around 100 fps and the GPU is at 95-100%

With more then 100 players on screen it runs at 30 fps and the GPU stays around 50%

So can a game/server bottleneck? And good articles on this if it is?

Im on windows 8.1, G.Skill 16gb 2133mhz, 840 Pro SSD, 1080p monitor.

Thanks cool peeps! :D

It might just be the way the game was designed. To be honest, I'm not sure.

"M. Aronnax." replied the Canadian, "your arguments are rotten at the foundation. You speak in the future, 'We shall be there! we shall be here!' I speak in the present, 'We are here, and we must profit by it.'"

It's probably just how the game takes advantage of the resources (ie only using up to 60% of your CPU; with all the player information, like location and actions, being processed by your CPU to display on the screen, when it's poorly coded and can only use 60% of your CPU, your GPU will have to wait to get drawcalls, resulting in poor utilization of the GPU).

So 2 for bad game design lol, sounds about right not a very big game.

When the CPU hits 60% the GPU is around 50% and am only getting about 30 fps. When the CPU is at 30ish % the gpu is at 100% and I get around 100 fps.

So ya Im trying to figure this out, in the future for 4k monitor xD doubt Guild Wars 2 will run it at any decent fps. Haven't been able to find anyone using a 4k monitor with the game playing World vs World.

More players = more CPU intense.

It's quite normal. Same thing in BF4. Multiplayer = very CPU intensive SP = mostly GPU intensive

Well actually sometimes when the cpu goes down to 30-40 % with 100 players and the gpu also only runs at 50% and I get around 30 fps. So Im guessing its the game!!

@krayiss

The extra people requires more processing (handling information from the server, like location, skills used for animations, ect.; obviously more people means more locations to keep track of, more skills going on, ect.). The bottleneck is the game not properly using your CPU, resulting in poor GPU usage, leaving you with 30FPS.
