So I have a week of my summer break when I have nothing planned. I hope to do something for around $300. I was thinking about building a server (that thingy with hard drives so that I can dump files on it. I am most definitely am open to other ideas. I can't use this money for upgrades. :( I have no idea how to build a server so if I decide on building one I may ask for help. Maybe something with networking? idk. Any ideas? Thanks.

A used server on eBay and buy hard drives and store what you want on it.

Is there any kind that you suggest?

-snip-

a prebuilt NAS box from amazon would be able to handle what you want but storage expansion wise they suck and also have other issues that may limit what you want to do, it's up to you:

https://www.amazon.com.au/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=NAS

if you don't mind screwing around with FreeNAS or something else then get an old desktop that is decent for most modern stuff (a dual core with 4GB of RAM is your best bet) that also has a lot of drive bays (you can add more via other methods, can't rember what they are called (not JBOD because thats expansive and requires more things that i will not go into)), then get some storage (RAID and other parity solutions are best if you want redundancy for your data, don't hesitate to ask what solution would be best for you, we can help with that!) put it in and configure it the way you need to and off you go!
