Half my internet doesn't work.

Neo Blackheart

It seems like half of my internet is down. Steam won't connect. I can't access any game servers on any games and like 5 or 6 sites just won't connect for me on the web. Discord is also out. But for some reason as you can tell I can access certain sites like this one. Any clue what the heck is going on?

this would likely be an issues with DNS, you PC caches many of your most recent sites IP address.

This video should help you change it

yep it would be a DNS issues, the ISPs may be down.

If resetting the router doesn't fix it then its likely a routing problem at your ISP or on the Internet itself, they do happen occasionally.   In which case it might be worth contacting your ISP, just to see if they are aware of the problem.

Still, often they do not know and you just have to wait for the problem to go away on its own.

Router:  Intel N100 (pfSense) WiFi6: Zyxel NWA210AX (1.7Gbit peak at 160Mhz)
WiFi5: Ubiquiti NanoHD OpenWRT (~500Mbit at 80Mhz) Switches: Netgear MS510TXUP, MS510TXPP, GS110EMX
ISPs: Zen Full Fibre 900 (~930Mbit down, 115Mbit up) + Three 5G (~800Mbit down, 115Mbit up)

i get this problem i cant connect to anything when i try to load a site it says cannot connect to server

what i did was go into my wifi card driver and change the ipv4 settings, before they were static now they are

local ip:192.168.0.6

subnet mask:255.255.255.0

gateway:192.168.0.1

dns1:1.1.1.1

dns2:1.0.0.1

and it started to work, this works if u use 192.168.0.1 to login to ur modem

That has nothing to do with having "partial" connectivity though.

Its also a bad idea to use static IP addresses if you haven't reserved them on the router as any clients that are still using the routers DHCP server could end up being given the same IP address you assigned statically.

i said i had the same problem and i did that to fix it.... it was just a suggestion, it worked for me, all static ips are availible from 192.168.0.2- 192.168.0.255 because 192.168.0.1 is my router. if u dont set it to static then it just randomly picks one, but if u set it to the one you want then its easy to manage multiple range boosters and other devices on ur network

The problem is that generally consumer routers don't let you choose the DHCP range and many don't let you set a static DHCP IP.

If you simply set a static IP on the client then the DHCP server does not know and will happily give out that IP address to another client, causing an IP conflict.  In which case one client may work sporadically, or they may both fail.  Its just a bad bad idea if you do not understand what you are doing.
