Im going to use liquid metal on my laptop because temps are too hot for my liking between 80-90c. Iv got the LM and the tape but i also want to apply some clear nail polish for good measure since the laptop will be moving around alot in and out of bags and set up ect.

My question is what kind of nail polish? does it matter if it is liquid or gel, does it matter if it contains nylon? alot of nail polish seems to have that. Whats the max temp that nail polish can take before it breaks down or melts?

Would this stuff be okay?

Are you sure the temperatures you're getting are due to a delta-T created at the heat trasnfer point? And not just a shoddy heatsink? LM doesn't really help that much in laptops. Eventually, they will get just as hot. They use low-power components so you won't hit any of the high TDP's you'd get in desktop parts that warrant the use of LM.

Just re-apply some decent compound, clean out the heatsinks and call it a day.

I used acrylic conformal coating for PCBs, the same stuff Linus used in one of his liquid metal videos (MG Chemicals was the brand I think). You can get away with certain nail polishes but if you use the right stuff to begin with it takes the guessing out of the equation. I was able to get some for around $20 online (I'm in Australia though).
