So my cousin wants to build a pc, but he doesn’t want it for much, more so for playing games like emulators, fortnite, and league. He also didn’t wanna spend too much on it so I told him to just go wth one of ryzen a apu’s and to leave space in his pc for future upgrades and when we came up with the list of parts on pc part picker, we saw that warning saying some motherboards don’t have bios updates for the new raven ridge cpu’s and I was wondering, what do I do about that? Because it says I would need a cpu that does work on that motherboard and install the bios update with that cpu and then I can put in the raven ridge cpu. Is there an alternative or do I have to buy a cheap cpu and then do the bios update take out the cpu and put in the raven ridge cpu?

ASUS boards can update the BIOS without a CPU or RAM, idk if lower end boards have it or not, but AMD will send you out a crappy AM4 CPU for you to boot up and install the new BIOS on if the board doesn't support it out of box, but most boards have more recent BIOSes.

Yours faithfully

You'll need a BIOS update. Higher end B350 ASUS boards have BIOS flashback, but if the board you want doesn't have that function AMD will lend you a shit 5 year old APU which can barely run the Windows desktop, so you can BIOS flash.

Unless you want to shell out the US$140 for the cheapest X470 boards.

Most current boards should have an updated BIOS at this point.

It needs to be an AM4 CPU, they'll send you the lowest end Zen-based A-series chip.

How can I check if the motherboard comes with the bios update needed, I wanted to use this one

That one's the highest end B350 ASUS board. It'll have flashback.

Alright, thanks I’ll just tell my cousin to shell out those extra bucks to not have to worry about any bios updates or getting a crappy apu from ryzen and pay to send it back to them
