single CPU vs. dual CPU power consumption

I'm going to set up a new server

and planning to buy 1 or 2 Xeon processor for it

My question is how much more power it will draw if I going from 1 to 2 CPUs

Assume all the CPU(s) will NOT go full load and model is the same

So my prediction is the power consumption won't go double

since the workload will spread across 2 CPUs then less power will draw

i.e Dual CPU 10% usage per CPU vs. single 20% CPU usage (not the real calc, but hope you get what I mean)

Thx.

In short you will have a higher power consumption than with 1 cpu because even when the cpu idles it draws a good amout of power maybe 10% of the full load.

What are you going to be using them for?

For hosting several steam games server (>5 games)

sometimes for rendering

2 CPUs will give me more cores, so more expansibility in the future

But I'm curious how much more will draw if both 1 and 2 CPUs not going full load

if you can and dont need so much cores (or pcie lanes) go with 1 cpu

what cpu and socket?

what mtherboard?

what usecase?

looking for 1 or 2 E5-2690 v2

cuz I have a lot of ddr3 ecc ram on hand

for a project like this you should go with 2 you need the pcie lanes and the cores (atleast if you dont want to spend 10.000$ on a cpu :))

PS: Sorry was thinking of 5 gamers 1 pc.   1 cpu sould be enough

Then about anouther 20-50w depending on load at idle and the amount of ram in the second cpu.

If its just running idle though, get one cpu.

What are you using it for?

Then id get something like s2600cp and run both if you have them. Then you get lots of ram for vms and more than enough cpu power.

Power draw is my 1st priority

then ehy are you going 2011? Thats a pretty power hungy system. Go with a ryzen based system if you care about power and sell the ram you have.

I'm using e5 1650 v2 right now, almost full load

and I have a lot of ddr3 ecc ram on hand

also you can over/under clock the amd cpu. you get big powersaving if you underclock and lower the cpu voltage

PS: I have a 1700x and disabled 4 cores + under volting/clocking and if i need more power i just need to crank some values :)

But i have to spend much more to get the same performance. :(

the ram price is going crazy

 I can't get full 64GB of ddr4, but I already have 11x 8GB of ddr3

but your also saving the money in power.2011 really isn't that efficent and my dual 2680 v2 system uses over 400 watts under load. Sell your ram and get a newer platform if you care about power consumption. Otherwise just go dual 2011.

at 0.11$/kwh i would give a fuck about power consumtion if the system needs 50w more you pay about 50$/year extra so you can calculate whats the best cpu for you if you want to keep te 88gb of ram

bdw I pay .34 usd per kwh soooo power consumption really matter for me :)
