You can, but it depends on the monitor. Some monitors are limited to 60 Hz over HDMI.

If you are looking for 1080p monitors I recommend the ViewSonic XG2401 or XG2402, they can do 144 Hz over HDMI.

you can. but i would question why do you need a 144hz monitor if you dont have the hardware to run games at 144hz? there's not much benefit of high refresh rates in non gaming workloads

There are games he can play just fine at 144Hz like Rocket League, CS:GO, Overwatch, Dota 2, LoL, ... etc... on Low/Medium settings at least.

HDMI 1.4 can run 144Hz at 1080p also just fine.

feels like a waste of money on a monitor to play those games on such low settings :(

TBH, I did just that when my 1080ti was on RMA except I played with 1050 2GB on a 1440p 165Hz and I really havent noticed much of a downgrade when playing those games on LOW.

But other games were definitely not playable at 1440p most of the time :D

And if I choose 1.4 HDMI all screen can take that ?

depends on the monitor you're talking about

also, allow me to crrect myself. Your laptop has HDMI 1.4 rather than HDMI 2.0 on Pascal cards, so 144Hz only possible in 1080p or lower

it wont work, i tried it with my old 7567 and a 1440p 144hz display, it would just not work as the output of those laptops (like yours) are connected to the cpu not directly to the gpu. You need something like a g3 laptop to run at 144hz. (this is all regardless of the resolution, 1080 is capped at 60hz, so is 720p)

As longas the monitor has HDMI it should work at the very least on 120Hz.

No, a lot of popular monitors like the VG248QE are limited to 60 Hz over HDMI. You have to choose carefully.

What, really?

I don't understand why.

Can you at least OC it on the HDMI then? By setting a custom resolution.

Nope. The control chips they use don't support full HDMI 1.4 bandwidth.
