yea it's worth it for rendering and stuff, but if your like playing games and thats it then I wouldn't recommend it, instead get a i5 4670k/3570k.

I wasn't planning on overclocking. What series would you recommend?

I would get a 3570K/4670K and sell the motherboard for a Z77/Z87 Mini-ITX as you would save $100 dollars getting a i5 with no performance loss over a i7 in gaming and you can overclock later meaning the system will last you longer as it's "free" performance.

Mein Führer... I CAN WALK !!

If you don't have an overclocking motherboard and you have a discrete GPU you can go for the Intel Xeon E3-1230 V2.  It's basically an i7-3770 at a slightly lower clock speed without integrated graphics and $70 cheaper

I forgot to mention, make sure your motherboard supports xeon.  Gigabyte's website doesn't mention xeon, but it should be compatible.

Well If you live in the U.S. pricematch this through Staples Online live chat.

http://www.microcenter.com/product/388577/Core_i5_3570K_34GHz_LGA_1155_Processor

150 bucks, who cares if you can't OC it. Staples still carries them as well.

http://www.staples.com/Intel-BX80637I53570K-i5-3570K-34-GHz-Processor/product_IM1NA4072

Many people have matched Microcenter through Staples online price matching. The 3770k is 249.99 if you want 8 thread.

If you don't live in the U.S and can't OC on your board. As someone else said a Xeon Ivy 8 thread chip is the best buy. They are usually a lot cheaper then the 3770 and are the same thing. They will probably = a 5ghz AMD in 8 thread games and crush them in 4 core and under games due to much higher floating point. They aren't bad chips at all.

CPU:24/7-4770k @ 4.5ghz/4.0 cache @ 1.22V override, 1.776 VCCIN. MB: Z87-G41 PC Mate. Cooling: Hyper 212 evo push/pull. Ram: Gskill Ares 1600 CL9 @ 2133 1.56v 10-12-10-31-T1 150 TRFC. Case: HAF 912 stock fans (no LED crap). HD: Seagate Barracuda 1 TB. Display: Dell S2340M IPS. GPU: Sapphire Tri-x R9 290. PSU:CX600M OS: Win 7 64 bit/Mac OS X Mavericks, dual boot Hackintosh.

As the others have already mentioned, getting a K skew chip is pointless, because of the fact that you have an H77 motherboard. In my opinion the best thing you can buy for that platform is a 3770, since it will be compatible no matter what, unlike the Xeons.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 - 3900x @ 4.4GHz with a Custom Loop | MBO: ASUS Crosshair VI Extreme | RAM: 4x4GB Apacer 2666MHz overclocked to 3933MHz with OCZ Reaper HPC Heatsinks | GPU: PowerColor Red Devil 6900XT | SSDs: Intel 660P 512GB SSD and Intel 660P 1TB SSD | HDD: 2x WD Black 6TB and Seagate Backup Plus 8TB External Drive | PSU: Corsair RM1000i | Case: Cooler Master C700P Black Edition | Build Log: here

The motherboard's CPU QVL includes that model Xeon.

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.
