in disk manager initiate, create new partition and format.

if cannot initiate, delete any partitions, create new one then format.

also you might wanna check if the partition has a drive letter.

sometimes drive letter is not assigned automatically, therefore you cannot see it in explorer.

I i have an external hdd which i used for my xbox but no longer do now my question is how do i get it to work on my laptop when i go to device manager and right click the external hdd it says initiate no option for format any help would be appreciated

Clean it first

Open a command prompt as Administrator

Type diskpart

Type list disk

Find the drive in the list and get it's ID#

Type select disk ID# (obviously replace ID# with the drives number)

Type clean

Type exit

Then you should be able to initialise it normally.

Btw if you clean the wrong drive you'll delete everything from it so MAKE SURE YOU USE THE RIGHT DRIVE ID. I'm not responsible if you kill the wrong drive.
