If you want to play with nodes, curves etc. and want good tracing of your works - Corel is what you need (version X6 or higher). Cheper than Illustrator and perfect for cutting plotter. Also even if Illustrator was considered as better, it's not 100% true. I know people who using Illustrator and Corel and both programs has their advantages. For example one of my friend using Corel for all curves manipulation and drawing / editing curves, even if he uses Illustrator for other stuff. It doesn't really matter what program do you want to use, it may be even Inkscape if you have lot of patience and don't care about lack of options (including good tracing).
