WD external error

I have a WD 3tb external hard drive that I have been putting all my backups and documents on, but now when I plug it in (USB) I get the pop up saying "in order to use this device it must be formatted" and gives me the option to format or cancel also have another 1tb WD external that is doing the same thing.

What do I need to do to get my stuff back?

If they're USB did you try plugging them into another computer?
