Can you guys recommend some good desktop speakers around the $250 US price range? I am really a noob when it comes to choosing speakers since I mainly use headphones.

It can be anything, like a soundbar with subwoofer, bookshelf speakers, those 'gaming' speakers, etc.

My main priority is sound quality. Looks are secondary.

Also, I am gonna use it with my PC, so I don't think surround sound is necessary?

Your best option would be JBL LSR 305, at least if sound quality is your main priority. They are worlds better than anything from Logitech, Razer, corsair and etc.

you can probably get them on ebay or whatever for 250

Before you buy amp and dac.  My thoughts on the M50x  Ultimate Ears Reference monitor review I might have a thing for audio...

My main Headphones and IEMs:  K612 pro, HD 25 and Ultimate Ears Reference Monitor, HD 580 with HD 600 grills

DAC and AMP: RME ADI 2 DAC

Speakers: Genelec 8040, System Audio SA205

Receiver: Denon AVR-1612

Desktop: R7 1700, GTX 1080  RX 580 8GB and other stuff

Laptop: ThinkPad P50: i7 6820HQ, M2000M. ThinkPad T420s: i7 2640M, NVS 4200M

The Logitech Z623 Speakers is what I have. They have great audio quality and they could get pretty loud. Also relatively cheap with your price range.

with all my love for logitech.. i hope for €250 there are products that are made by *actual* audio engineering companies, not just a manufacturer putting decent quality speakers in a nice enclosure.

Essentially all you just said is also true for my set of €15 logitech speakers, and while their bigger and better sets do give some extra oomph, they do lack the depth below said "oomph".

i'm not an audio snob by any means, but if you can get a nice pair of "properly engineered" bookshelf speakers, i'd highly recommend a pair of "propperly engineered" bookshelf speakers.

as for an actual recommendation.. i'd say listen to dackzy when it comes to speakers with good sound quality.

i'm a tube amp person, so my personal recommendations would be a bit out of place here.

I like a home theater system hooked up via SPDIF, optical in my case.

Footsteps behind you.

This type of thing is OK to buy used too.

especially if you consider the deals to be had.. my 15+ year old system (hell.. time goes fast) can be had second hand for cheaper than a replacement remote.

I love surround on my PC.  If you game, particularly FPS, then surround is great for hearing things behind you ( @wONKEyeYEs).  It does require room for the rear speakers (I've got mine mounted to my chair).  If you can fit surround into your setup, it's great!

Alas, no.  I'm using an ancient Klipsch Promedia 4.1 system that is long out of production (you can find them on ebay periodically).  I honestly don't know what sounds good out there now for PC speakers.

Any other recommendations? so that I can do a bit of comparison on my own (and maybe learn a thing or two about studio monitors and speakers in general xD)

In this budget no not really. They are pretty much the go to speakers. Studio monitors are meant to be very flat in their response, ofc your room is going to make  them respond differently than they would in a perfect room, aka your room will color the sound. Studio monitors are for close up listening, most of them are also powered, so you don't need an amp, but the listing price is 9/10 times per speaker and not for 2 speakers.

Because they are back ported it would be best if you could give them some space behind them.
