Hey Guys,

I need some help. I am looking to build a new PC.

I want to use it for Workstation applications, I am a Sound Engineer so it needs to be suitable for Cubase, so a rather powerful CPU and RAM, Graphics are not that important maybe light Gaming but it will need to power 3 Monitors.

Also it needs to be Rack mounted.

Do you have any suggestions for a case and components fitting in it whilst remaining cool and being moderately quiet,

Thanks in Advance

Cheers Mo

The rackmount threw me for a loop and i realized i had no clue how to shop for server parts. Whoever answers this, could you please tell some info on where you shopped, what to look for etc

Insanity is not the absence of sanity, but the willingness to ignore it for a purpose. Chaos is the result of this choice. I relish in both.

Rackmount doesn't necessarily mean server, check out Linus's old personal rig updates. You can buy a lot of server hardware from SuperMicro though(except for CPUs, RAM, and so forth).

Fair enough, but when he says rackmount, other than the case and psu being different form factor, can most any mobo and gpu and components fit or do most things fit?

Depends on chassis. Some rackmount cases don't support full-size GPUs and only fit LP cards. I don't know too much about rackmounting though.

well what i found out in my research is that mostly when using a server case with workstation cpu and gpu is you will run into problems with thermals because they generate more heat and need more powerful coolers.

now this might be wrong so correct me if so...

but even in a normal case having a workstation cpu and lets just say a small quadro will need some serious cooling to run at good temps, if i was building in a normal case i would think about using an aio waterloop for the cpu at least now in linus personal rig he had full watercooling? but his case was huge, i have about 60 to 70 centimeters depth, and the supermicro cases are (from what ive seen so far) also super expensive

Rackmount cases tend to be loud because they usually use smaller fans.

Is a rackmount truly necessary?

Well i want rackmount since i have the rack already where i want to put in the pc and the rest of the studio audio Equipment and apart from that I am lacking the space for a full tower in my appartment, and even if rsther unrealistic because its gonna be unwieldly i wamt to have it all in that rack to be able to tale it along for lets just say a live recording or something like that.

I know rackmount will run me in some problems but in the Situation its just my preferred setup

There are some 4U cases that support 120mm fans. But cpu and motherboard need to be settled on before choosing a case.

i am rather openminded on what cpu and motherboard, cpu wise i am thinking about an intel i7 something in the rewgion of an 8700k if you think that suits my workstation needs, cubase is a pretty cpu intensive audio editing software.

i dont know much about motherboards so any advice here is welcome

I was wondering if you needed more cpu power. But if you think an i7-8700K is going to be enough, then something like the following is a good starting point.

Rather than an unlocked cpu, I'd suggest the i7-8700. At anything but idle the cpu is just 100 MHz slower than the i7-8700K. The lower base clock means it will run cooler when just sitting there. The cpu cooler is good to 140W TDP and fits in the case. It, along with the Noctua case fans should minimize noise levels.
