i feel like this is the wrong place to post this but its sort of to do with computers so here goes..

ever since i found this forum, and started watching linus's videos, ive almost fallen inlove with computers, hardware especially.

i love reading up on the latest components released and discussing why one would be better then another..

but the time is coming in my life where i need to make a decision on what i want to do for a career..

i love computers i like working with and on them and i would kill for a job where i could build computers/servers, trouble shoot hardware and all that good stuff. i dont mind the software side of things but its never really been my forte; i understand what im doing with it but sometimes it just doesnt agree.

anyhow, at my highschool (secondary school or w.e you want to call it) im in my last year, and ive found a computer course for when i leave school, if i successfully complete it, it should give me a diploma in pc support and bunch of certifications to boot that i dont quite understand.. will be listed under here..

1 - compTIA A+ certification preparation

2 - compTIA network+ certification

3 - compTIA security+ certification

this course is mainly hands on practical which is right up my alley, i cant stand writing long essays but i can if i have too.

after all that, ive come to the conclusion that i would really like a job in the computer world. but i dont feel like its a proper career, i dont feel like i could further my career unless i opened my own shop and expanded that way.

after that one year course i was considering doing a 2 year or so apprentice as an electrician.. this means that if i was to open a shop it wouldnt just have to be computers, and could be technology and electrics as well

for me to open a shop or even consider it is very far fetched in my current situation :S

also to note..

i was talking to my neighbour who said i should check out what itd be like to be an electrician/automotive electrician as he knows i like playing around with electrics, does anybody have any idea how i could get started with that? and any idea on the types of jobs they could range from?

any feedback is appreciated

Would your shop require a cheap fitted kitchen?

I'd say it sounds like youve thought it out a lot but just bare in mind the cost of starting up your own shop, and would anyone actually go it it? Indipendant computer stores dont do so well because of huge stores like PC world and maplins.

Idk to me it's more of a hobby. & some guys get lucky and the hobby turns into a career. Like Linus.

He had a job at NCIX, worked hard there, built up his rep, while working on their videos and starting his own. Then branched off.

Do what ever courses you can to get into IT, yes it is a career, I do IT support at the moment but hey its IT and I get to play with computers all day :D and I will get better roles with more experience.

If you can back it up with electronics then do so something to fall back on is not a bad thing. But wait for a few years before thinking of opening your own shop, experience is very hard to get via a course no matter how good the instructor is. I deal with so many weird and wonderful issues on a daily basis and with each solution I come up with I learn something be it user related or computer related these are all things that cant be taught.

I am not sure how old you are but highschool still gives you a long time to get into what you love doing.

im 17 and finish highschool at the end of next year(will be 18 then)..

so ive got 1 year in highschool and 1 year for my IT course.

electronics seem to keep interesting me in general whether it be computers or playing around getting a whole bunch of leds to flash with the music..

i would wait a good amount of time before opening and owning a shop because there are alot of pc shops around whether they be good or not they are well known and will soak up all the business

thats what i think when i think about it :L i feel asthough if i get a job thatd be great but i couldnt really branch off from there much.. especially in nz..
