I'm trying to figure out a solution for implementing a m.2 nvme ssd into my video editing setup. I checked, and my laptop does not have a m.2 slot. So, my solution would be to get a pcie to m.2 adapter for my server and then map the drive as a network drive for my laptop. However, I'm wondering if this would restrict the drivers potential in any way? Because the m.2 ssd is rated at 8gbps over pcie 3, where as my ethernet port on the laptop and on the server are only 1gbps. I'm not sure if that would hinder the performance benefit.

The most you'll see out of it is 125MB/s. You'd need a 10Gbit NIC to see the performance and a drive on the laptop that's just as fast (which most SATAIII SSD's cap around 550~600MB/s

why do you want a nvme drive for editing, unless your working with uncompressed files it will make almost no difference.

What laptop?

If you do it over the network it will be much slower and limited by the network.

For use a temporary file workspace. Have my raw video files accessible so that all renders and edits to the files are carried out faster since I work with 4k footage.

I'm using my Lenovo y50-70 at the moment. It's an older one that I intend to replace in a year or two, but I was looking for a temporary solution until then.

That sucks. I'll just hold out until I invest into a new laptop then.

Don't use network, it will be slower than a usb hdd here.

Get a sata ssd, thats more than enough speed here, you can't even use a nvme drive here.

Your not limited by drive with a ssd here, your limited by the cpu.

What bitrate? 4k video normally isn't that big unless your shooting uncompressed or red or something like that.

Not nearly that dense as a red camera. Just using my Panasonic Lumia for 4k in MP4/AVCHD at 100mbps for 24fps/30fps depending.

Then a sata ssd is more than enough speed, no reason to go nvme here. That is only 12.5mB/s of data, thats not that much. Even 16x playback is way under the max that a sata ssd can do.

Ok. I guess I was just under the assumption that the more speed the better. Wasn't aware of the other factors

what editor are you using?

Your probably cpu limited or ram limited. Id also look into using proxies and this can make editing much more smooth.

Adobe Premiere Pro. I also use audition for creating graphic templates.

Ok. I'll start setting that up and runs some tests to see the difference. I'm hoping to either upgrade my laptop or build a workstation in a year or two to create a more long term hardware solution.

Just food for though, if using your desktop is an option at all - you could just use RDP and work off your desktop vs laptop. On a LAN connection, getting 30fps is easy. 60fps is just a quick registry tweak.

As for what setup is good for editing I have no idea. I didn't even realize editing 4k on 1920x1080 was a thing, guess it just scales down?
