SSDs and HDDs

hey guys im back and now have questions about storage

 

so im building my first gaming rig now and im planning to get a 500Gb samsung 960 (for OS and other stuff) and a 2Tb WD blue for game storage.

 

for ssd, is it worth getting the pro variant or even the 970 over the 960? and why?

 

for HDD, whats the best HDD storage available in the market as of now? ive heard some people say that WD black is better than blue and that firecuda is faster but it's a fusion and it's pointless to get a firecuda if u already have an SSD

- The 970 EVO is slightly faster, so if it's the same price it's definitely worth it, if it's more expensive, you might as well go for the 960 EVO

- The PRO of either series is, again, slightly faster than the EVO and they have built in encryption if I recall correctly. Not really worth the 30% price hike for most

- Yea, as a long time WD user who now have Seagate.. I would say go for WD. WD Blue 2TB drives run at 5400RPM, while Black drives run at 7200RPM (and the Blue and Black have 2 and 5 years warranty respectively). Not really worth it, unless it is your game or video edit drive.

- Also, SSHD's are indeed not worth it (IMO) if you have an SSD already. It's an inexpensive way to get an HDD with some fast cache, but the things you absolutely need the cache for (Windows booting and larger program booting) should be placed on your SSD regardless.

As for the HDD, just get a Blue or a Barracuda.

The SSD will perform great at its price point. I suggest a Barracuda 2TB as your HDD.

To add: PRO ones have higher endurance/warranty as well.

960 EVO 500GB: 200 TBW (all Evo models have 3 years warranty unless TBW is fulfilled first)
960 PRO 512GB: 400 TBW (same but 5 years for Pro models)

@AskTJ @Minibois @Lenovo1984 im pretty set and confident with the 960 samsung choice. but im having a hard time deciding on an HDD. a Barracuda, WD black or WD blue? i dont care about the pricepoint for HDDs as they are cheap i just wanna get the fastest and the most durable among the aforementioned HDDs

As a Barracuda owner, my next drive wont be a Seagate anymore. It kinda ticks in operation which I never had with any of my previous WD drives.

Furthermore, IMO the Black is not worth it in day to day usage, maybe in video editing it can be worth it, but you would much rather have large video files you're working on now on an SSD and move them over one you're done.

 

So my vote goes to the WD Blue, because the Black is just needless luxury. Spend that luxury on getting a higher capacity drive or spend it on getting a backup solution.

Yes, blue would be the better choice as black was for 24/7 writes (I think, don't quote me on this), but the blue will work great.

AFAIK the 1TB models are.
