Just asking for opinion, what drive do you think is best for 6x drive at RAID 10. I am leaning towards more performance so preferably 7200 RPM and no more than 4TB per drive.

Right now im looking at seagate barracuda 2TB but people say seagate is not reliable but as Linus's server uses seagate drives aswell so im not sure on going on that drive.

If you have any recommendation let me know

What are you using this for? How much iops do you need? MB/s?

Why raid 10?

What system?

Why 4tb max?

Normally you want nas or raid drives here.

this im not sure. im no expert

i feel like its has both raid 0 and raid 1 benefits thats why i chose that

right now i have a 8700k with 2x1080ti and 1tb 960evo for main drive and 2x1tb wd blue in raid 0 for secondary

its kinda expensive.... but i can go 6tb if it is better

for the drive they are not going to be cramped i have a phanteks enthoo elite and im just filling the bottom chamber with drives. those drives will be nice and comfy :)

what are you going to be storing on here?

For a game/media drive id just get something like dual 8 or 12tb drives. Get a ssd cache if you want more speed. And you can always add anouther drive or two later on for more space.

Id use storage spaces in windows. Flexable for storage and will work well here.

Dont quote me on this but won’t it be faster if you raid multiple smaller drives together? And I don’t now how to setup a SSD cache. Mainly I’ll say movie games but i plan to offload video from surveillance camera to those drive to store them for longer.

If you're coping over 1Gb network then a single HDD is actually capable in most cases to saturate that link alone, if it's cheaper to get 2 larger HDDs and mirror them you'll have more options as to how you do it. Once you start looking at RAID 10 or RAID 5/6 you hit limitations of software or hardware, motherboard RAID is garbage for anything other than RAID 1 or 0 for instance.

If you aren't coping over a network and it's just internal storage for the PC then the faster speeds is kind of nice but how often will you actually need it? Unless you're constantly coping data between an SSD and the array you won't see any benefit.

Just keep it simple if you can.

Here is a speedtest of most drives on the market:
https://nl.hardware.info/reviews/7977/9/64-35-inch-harde-schijven-round-up-opslag-verdiend-testresultaten-atto-randomnwrite

Personally I would pick a drive which has proven to be reliable. Linus' drives were sponsored, as I remember, so I would not pick the Baracuda's on the sole reason that he uses them.
I am a fan of HGST and Toshiba drives, since they haven't failed me in the past 10 years, however, your experience might be different.

i was originally looking at the HGST deskstar nas 4TB but i can only find one place that sells them and the have been out of stock for 3 months now... basically in Australia you can only get Seagate, WD, and maybe Toshiba or HGST.

personally i dislike Toshiba drives they never work properly for some reason and a few of them failed on me for only a year or 2

You could always pick the WD in that case. Just make sure to look into the reliability of the specific model number of the drive.

You can also buy different drive models of the same size. This decreases the chance that multiple drives in your array will fail at the same time, but most would consider this risk to be insignificant.

And remember, RAID is not a backup. So make sure to also store your data elsewhere.
