Help optimizing Adobe

Go to solution Solved by Big Head Tech,

Well I have an answer.  It is adobe.  My laptop I7-6500U with 8GB of ram plays 10 times better.  Due to it's resources though it drops a ton of frames but it plays way better.  Quicksync is the answer here.

So I made another about the hardware side but realized it is not the hardware.  Working with Adobe and raw 4k DNG files is a problem for my client.  I tested my Ryzen 5 1600x with 16GB of DDR4 2933MHz ram and it hard locks up just trying to play back a 16 second unedited raw clip.  My clients system has a Threadripper 1950x 64GB DDR4 Memory, 500GB NVME SSE, GTX 1080 TI SC, etc.  It should not be pegging 100% CPU usage and freezing during video playback.  We just reloaded Windows, temps are fine as well.  And my Ryzen 5 system hard locks up trying to do this so it's definitely an adobe issue.

Adobe Does not like Ryzen based CPU's, it has had MANY issues. Intel has paid adobe a ton of money for adobe to "optimize" for intel based cpu's (and yet it can still fuck up big time) its a big reason why i almost NEVER recommend ryzen for anyone who uses Adobe. Its not optimized and Adobe is fucking HORRID at doing decent updates without breaking 4 other things

You would probably have to get a job at adobe to fix their issues.

Didn't seem like anyone had major problems until recently.

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

The issues I have seen is DNG file itself is the problem, it shouldn't peg the CPU to 100% during playback.  When converted to an MP4 file it is perfectly fine.

They have had intermittent issues for a while and depending on how much you could put up with (or if you never used a decent intel chip youd think it was just Normal adobe behavior) It was mainly though of at first as a "oh its a new platform give it a while to get adjusted" and adobe really never did.

Its not a fault of AMD or Ryzen, its purely Adobe lacking the desire or skill to quickly fix issues like this.

So what you're saying is, any Intel CPU say the 8700K would do 4k playback DNG files smoothly?  His 4790k was just as bad.

No i wouldnt say Any intel cpu. 8700k May do a decent enough job, obviously the 10-16 cores (although they lack the IGP Benefit with Quicksync rendering) would make playback smoother. If intel (looks like they will) release the 8 core in september, with the IGP it should be one of the best CPU's for adobe.

If Adobe properly optimized for ryzen, it would be fine (although premeire also prefers Clockspeed as well) but since theyve had problems or lack of interest in doing so in a timely manner, it will struggle.

But why does it only struggle with DNG files and nothing else?  MP4 and MOV files even large ones playback and scrub perfectly fine.

Well do you have GPU acceleration enabled? This guy appears to be doing 8k footage with a 1950X

Ive heard of people having Mp4 Issues, MOV files issues, Rendering Errors, Crashes with Ryzen and Intel. Adobe does not like certain file types, so it compounds the issue, especially with a already troubling Type CPU.

Yes I do.  Like I said, it's specifically 4k raw foot in Cinema DNG file format is the issue.

Just have them to handbrake it to another format? Most likely you'll have to go to the adobe forums, or contact their support to get a real answer.

Might be that whatever they do to DNG files is just broken for Ryzen if everything else works.
