Overclocking RAM..?

Go to solution Solved by Shimejii,

When you first boot into the BIOS, the ram will run at 2166, you have to manually set it to XMP profile, or switch it to 3000 mhz. (Rarely will a MOBO bios detect the 3000 mhz ram automatically switch to it.)

You should be fine to put it to the 3000 mhz if available on the MOBO, or if the 2666mhz is max put it to that.

CPU: AMD R5 1500X

MOBO: ASUS B350 PLUS

RAM: G.Skill Aegis 3000Mhz (SHOULD be)

Hello, so, long story short, I bought 2x8 ram sticks from G. Skill (Aegis if anyone interesting), both supposed to be at 3000Mhz. I bought them from a local retailer (not from a person but from an actual store that is very well known in my country) and paid full price for 3000Mhz (3000Mhz is like, $10 more expensive per stick than the 2133Mhz but whatever) and I installed them, no problems so far, however, I downloaded speccy to keep track of temperatures (yes, I know it is very inaccurate) and I noticed that the RAM was labeled as Unknown running at 1064Mhz per stick, and then I was like "Wait that means it's only 2133Mhz, what?" so I went into the BIOS to check, and it wrote 2133Mhz as well.

Now, on the package it doesn't say what speed the RAM is, and on my receipt it says it's 3000Mhz (that's what I paid for and the guy didn't manually type in the code but he scanned the code and it went automatically so I don't think I've been scammed ???) however, in my BIOS it said 2133Mhz.

Now, I don't know whether I've been scammed or its just that my MOBO/Ryzen automatically scaled down my speed, however I wanted to ask before I mess anything up.

Is it okay to overclock the ram up to 2666Mhz (I have a 1500X and on the AMD website it says that it reads only speeds up to 2667Mhz) or will I encounter issues?

I would go ahead and test it to find out by myself, however I am sort of scared if I mess things up since I've never before had the need to OC ram nor have I ever tried to.

Tl;dr: I got ram that is supposed to be 3000Mhz but in the BIOS it's read as 2133Mhz, speccy reads it as unknown altho its G.Skill Aegis, can I overclock it to 2666Mhz without encountering any errors? Part list written at the top.

Oh, that, I did not know. Thank you for the information, I appreciate it. I will OC to 2666mhz a bit later, thread is solved (I guess?) but I'll let it run for a few more minutes in case somebody has a tip that they want to give me (I'm still new at this and I've no idea what im doing tbh so yes, advice and tips are welcome :))

Just set the D.O.C.P. to 3000MHz. No guarantees that it will work at that speed out of the box however, since you are using first gen ryzen.
