Hello,

I am thinking of upgrading my outdated system, and am unsure about compatibility and which parts would be the most beneficial for my money.

I am wanting to spend approximately £150 on each part, as this will be something that I do overtime.

I don't play graphic heavy games, however I have started streaming, and do sometimes play games like Fortnite when trends occur.

I also have a generic 450w Power Supply.

Please find attached screenshots of CPU-Z.

Thank you,

Owen. :)

Whats your overall budget? spending 150 on each part is a very unproductive way to look at pc parts.

Hello, thanks for your reply.

I currently have a part time job, so am only looking at a maximum of around £450-£500.

I've been looking at things like:

Totalling = £480.

Thanks.

That cpu isn't compatible with your current board so it'd be a waste of money unless you buy a new motherboard and DDR4 ram, which would easily add $150~200 to your budget. What you can do is get a i7 3770 non-k for about £75 and this 1050 ti and you'll be in good shape for gaming. You really don't need 16GB of ram but if you really want it, going used will give you a much better value for your money. If all you're planning to do is play Fortnite, you can even get by with a GTX 1050 2GB and your current i5. Its not a bad cpu and it won't bottleneck a GTX 1050.

Ok, thank you.

I’ve now found out my motherboard is a MSI h61m-p31/w8.

Do you recommend any motherboards I could upgrade to with my current parts overtime?

Thanks again.

Though, at this point, going with a Ryzen based system will give you far better support and upgradability for the future since Zen 2 and most likely Zen 3 will both also share the same AM4 socket and any AMD B350 board will feature support for those chips with bios updates.

A Ryzen 5 2600 and this B350 board will be more than enough for gaming and streaming. Go with a decent 8GB (2x4GB) DDR4 kit, such as this Patriot kit and you'll be in good shape. If you do need 16GB, just buy two of those or one of this Team kit, which is actually a bit cheaper. Prices may vary in your region so just shop around for those.

Since my knowledge of AMD gear is very limited, even more than Intel, I have made this part picker build, using what I already have and what I'm planning on getting.

https://pcpartpicker.com/user/owenp22/saved/WJ9sJx

New parts would be:

  • CPU
  • CPU Cooler
  • RAM
  • GPU
  • PSU
  • Overtime a new case.

Thanks.

That should be more than adequate for streaming and gaming, just don't buy that i7 new, buy a used one. The ram is fairly easy to come by at that speed, if not faster for the same or slightly lower price. The only change to that list I'd make is getting a better quality power supply. Nothing extreme, just something that's built well with good components such as this Seasonic unit or this Cooler Master unit. Even if you're not doing anything extreme like overclocking or intense gaming on your machine, you still want a solid psu that won't ever give you an issue. That Corsair VS isn't built with the best quality parts and it doesn't offer much protection in the event of a blackout or brownout. For a better idea of what good power supplies and bad power supplies are, refer to this list. Personally, stick with any unit in the first three tiers and you should be ok. Tier 1 are the best power supplies available and suitable for extreme overclocking, provided they have the proper wattage. Tier 2 is suitable for mild overclocking and heavy use. Tier 3 are suitable for non-extreme or top end builds but very good for moderate use and gaming.
