I would love to get into shooting video, but I am on a strict budget of $300-400 with lenses. I was looking at the Nikon D3300 or D3400, for their versatility from short to long range. Am I looking in the right place? Should I go mirrorless instead of DSLR? I was looking at the Canon Eos M as well, but the poor AF turned me away.

Any input would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

You don't want something that can't AF and you are looking at Nikon?

the cheapest camera I can think of that has decent AF while recording video is a used Canon 70d, which even used will cost you waay more than $400 with a lens and mic. Mirrorless isn't better at it per se. Sony have decent AF on their newer cameras, but we are talking a7iii here, not a6000, ehich could possibly be in your budget, again disregarding the cost of lenses.

The answer is a cheap camcorder, or using your phone, anything else will either not have AF or cost you waay more than you've budgeted or both.

buy a handheld camcorder

yeah what would i know about cameras or cinematography compared to you tech people.  i've only done this work for nearly 20 years, won a few awards, worked in over a dozen different countries and a few multi million dollar projects

Good to know, thank you. So either get used to manual focus, or get a budget camcorder. Thanks! I will continue looking.
