Hello everyone,

I am looking to upgrade my cpu from a i5 6600k to an i7 7700k. I want to game at 144hz so i need more cpu power. The question is tho is this motherboard compatible with the 7700k or can i just simply update my BIOS.

System:

i5 6600k OCed to 4.4 GHz

GTX 1080 FE

16gb Balistix ram 2400 Mhz

700 Watt PSU

And for motherboard: MSI Z170 gaming pro carbon

it sound weird but in my country a 7700k in cheaper 310 euros. its 349 for a 6700k.

if an i5 8400+H310/B360 board is cheaper than a lone 6700/7700k then I'd get that instead.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600X Heatsink: Gelid Phantom Black GPU: Palit RTX 3060 Ti Dual RAM: Corsair DDR4 2x8GB 3000Mhz mobo: Asus X570-P case: Fractal Design Define C PSU: Superflower Leadex Gold 650W

so i guess running an update over my bios is the best option

Run a BIOS update. Id also recommend trying to OC a bit extra out of the CPU. You probably wont gain much to upgrade to the 7700k. You system is fully capable to do 144hz gaming

the 6600k will stutter and have fps drops at 144hz compared to the i7s so it's a nice to have.

well with that rig and in my experience take that 1080fe and put a normal cooler like https://www.arctic.ac/eu_en/accelero-xtreme-iv.html , i rather that than switching from a 6600k to a 7700k(I'm playing at 144fps 1440p with a 4790k and a 1070 with 0 problems (mid-high specs))

Case: Corsair 760T  |  Psu: Evga  650w p2 | Cpu-Cooler : Noctua Nh-d15 | Cpu : 8600k  | Gpu: Gygabyte 1070 g1 | Ram: 2x8gb Gskill Trident-Z 3000mhz |  Mobo : Aorus GA-Z370 Gaming K3 | Storage : Ocz 120gb sata ssd , sandisk 480gb ssd , wd 1gb hdd | Keyboard : Corsair k95 rgb plat. | Mouse : Razer deathadder elite | Monitor: Dell s2417DG (1440p 165hz gsync) & a crappy hp 24' ips 1080p | Audio: Schiit stack + Akg k712pro + Blue yeti.

That is very true. But i will have to excuse myself as i thought he had an 6700k. Should be capable at 144hz in games that leverage clockspeed.

Also an upgrade to a more modern plattform is somethingi would recommend more. He should overclock now and possibly do a CPU, mobo upgrade in a year or so when Ryzen 7nm (hopefully) is out and Intel 10nm(hopefully)

You dont think that computer is underperforming because blower style gpu? I dont think that 6600k could do anything but reduce fps about 10% from 7700k

Its possible, but the gain to a regular open style cooler is mostly noise wise and somewhat performancewise. He did mention his 6600k runnin at 90-100%. I would assume that is his catalyst for the fps drops.

Personally swapping the cooler on the fe card wouldnt yield too much in gains. Though in terms temps and noice a new cooler wouldnt be bad. He could also OC the GPU a bit.

@Bas Veenvliet  yes those extra threads would help some in terms of stuttering in some games. Id still try OC to see if that solves it.

well as mentioned early I'm now playing with a 4790k + 1070 on a dell s2417dg (165hz 1440p) and on fortnite  - poe - csgo - doto2-  normal comp games I can achieve 165 fps with textures high , shadows postpo & effects on medium @ 4.5Ghz so Maybe could be related to the games that he's playing (I've only achieved 70-80% usage streaming )

i (mostly right now) play modded Skyrim SE (photorealism mod) gta 5 and f1 2017. But i didnt mention that i like to play nvidia surround triple monitors. Does that strain CPU more or just GPU. Running 5760x1080

Might be due to loading stuttering and i believe you are straining your GPU more in this scenario (anyone correct me if im wrong). whats GPU usage?
