I can currently choose to buy a mid sized optiplex 980 with an i5-2500 or a small form factor optiplex 780 with an i7-2600. I want to upgrade a computer for minor gaming by putting and adequate gpu (probably gt 1030) into it. Should i choose the one thats bigger and can probably accomodate upgrades better or the better cpu but a smaller and more difficult system?

The Low profile cards for the SFF computers are $20 more but a 2600 is more powerful... Do you want a smaller PC?

Do you realize how much more expensive that is?

Last time I checked (and I've been working with Optiplex 780s and 980s for nearly a year now) neither of the CPUs you've listed are supported by the models.

Optiplex 980s has LGA1156 sockets and Optiplex 780s has LGA775 sockets...

Yeah your right, that is just a year too old for those CPUs.
