Mac Mini as NAS

I just bought an old Mac Mini that I would like to use as NAS. I would like some help on how to configure the mini to be accessed from both a MacBook Pro and a Windows pc. The Mac Mini has a 500GB SSD and a 2 TB hard drive. The most use of this computer would be data storage and transferring projects between MacBook Pro and a Windows pc.

What os is it running?

 

in osx go under shareing, file share, enable cifs and nfs and chose the folder you want to share.

The mini is running High Serra 10.13.3.

If you could install Windows (or ideally Linux) on it, yeah, I don't see why that wouldn't work. OSX to OSX sharing is all well and good, but OSX to Windows might cause some issues.

I want to have the mini running all of the time so I don't have worry about where my files are.

sharing in osx works fine. It has a modifed version of samba, that will work just fine as a file server, linux or windows won't help you here.

just go into system preference and then sharing, file sharing.

dont know what you paid for it but seeing what ridiculous amounts people pay for these on ebay you could have easily gotten a prebuilt NAS that would give you much more options.
