some've been looking around on amazon/newegg for an solid state drive. but I mostly see hard disc drives or mechanical drives at the lower budget.... but what's the difference in performance and memory?

hdd: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822236339&cm_re=wd_blue_1tb-_-22-236-339-_-Product

ssd: https://www.amazon.com/Blue-NAND-500GB-SSD-WDS500G2B0A/dp/B073SBZ8YH/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?ie=UTF8&qid=1527710882&sr=8-1-spons&keywords=wd+blue+ssd&psc=1

yes I know there is a difference in price and memory size... but still... whats the performance differences?

Hard Drives are mechanical and are extremely slow by todays standards. Solid State Drives are much faster than a Hard Drive since there are no moving parts.

Get an SSD.

If you are using the drive for Windows and programs, get an SSD.

If you are using the drive for storing files or need large space on a budget, get a HDD.

PC:

AMD Ryzen 9 5900X | AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE | 32 GB RAM | Arch Linux

Laptop:

MacBook Pro 13" (2019) | Intel Core i5 8279U | 8 GB RAM | macOS

Server:

Intel Core i7 6700K | 16 GB RAM | 2 TB HDD | Debian Linux

Performance difference depends on what your doing, but for most desktop tasks can be 10x lower latency and random io. It makes programs launch much faster, and the system just feels much more snappy. A ssd is a huge differece, get one.

oh another question... can I use multiple ssds?

yep you can put as many as you can fit in a system.

@Fritzer

as many as you have SATA ports on your motherboard (unless you want to buy a PCIe SATA controller card..)

Assuming you arent talking about PCIe SSDs
