professor etiquette

i was in class other day (this is uni btw), and at the start the professor called out names for those who got 100s on the test and asked everyone to applaud them and to look up to them for the next tests. is this acceptable in a college setting? seems odd

Yes, why not? it's like employee of the month, encouragement is good if you earn it.

 

It was better than getting trophy just for playing.

or getting call out just because you are massive failure, which one do you prefer?

Yes. It's very acceptable and I think most professors applaud students who get high grades. You're probably lucky if you never had a professor like my roommate had who once said to a student "Are you really that stupid or you're just a normal person genetically engineered to become a moron?" You might think it's mean and it is but professors have tenure and they can get away with humiliating their students.

thanks all. this i've yet to have a professor (or teacher) to have done this the entire class, at least as far as my memory stretches.

my geology professor does that but all it does is let the other mediocre students know whom to sit next to during exam time....

It's probably refreshing for them to see students taking their classes seriously.
