Hi everyone!

I'm planning to build a new gaming pc, as the one I have now is bottlenecked by my CPU/mobo.

Current build:

Ryzen 5 1600

GA-A370X Gaming K5

Corsair Vengeance LPX 3000mhz

Corsair RM750x

Samsung Evo 960 250gb M.2

Asus ROG Strix 1080 ti OC

Fractal Design Define C TG

Now, the problem I have with this build is that the CPU is bottlenecking me on games. Also, the motherboard is really bad on overclocking, it just wont let me run ram on 3000mhz, and even small overclocks (3.5-3.7ghz) is a pain to apply without the bios crashing and reloading backup F4 version bios. Which is why I want to upgrade to an i7-8700k, with a good motherboard. I plan on overclocking it to 4.7-5.0Ghz. I also want some G.skill ram and a Kraken x62 cooler. Don't get me wrong, the performance of this build is good, but for the price its not good enough, and I want those extra fps... Also I'm craving to do another build, and would like some RGB-action with the Kraken and G.skill ram :)

The case I have now is too small to fit an AIO in the front (due to the length of the strix-GPU). Therefore, I'm doing this easy, and plan to buy all new parts except for the GPU, and just sell the old one without GPU (maybe buy a used 1070 or something to fit in there if it's hard to sell it without GPU). I think I'll also keep the M.2 SSD, and will sell the old rig with a 2,5" SSD I have laying around.

But anyways, to get to the point, this is the new parts I plan on buy:

i7-8700k

ROG Strix z370-E gaming

RM750x

NZXT Kraken x62

G.skill Trident Z RGB 2x8gb 3200mhz

Phanteks Enthoo Pro M tempered glass

I have done a lot of research, but I'm still anxious if there are some parts of this build I should change. Do any of you have anything bad to say about the parts/config, or some suggestion that will make the build better without adding too much cost?

I think before I jumped into a new build for marginal gains I would look more into why that cpu isn’t overclocking. What resolution are you playing at? What voltage is on the cpu for overclocking? What cooler are you using? Have a look at my Ryzen ram guide to get that memory higher, I found that increasing tRS from 56 to 62 allowed me to run higher speeds I also had to increase the ddrv

The parts looks fine.

Depending on where you live it will be quite hard to sell your old system; remember Ryzen 5 1600 has no integrated graphics card and therefore a discrete graphics card is required with that system.

Based on that I would rather keep your current RAM modules, case and power supply and sell the other components separately.

On the CPU cooler you could spare some money by going with an air cooler (e.g. Noctua NH-D15).

This will eventually lower the update cost.

1080p there is no wonder the CPU is the bottleneck when you have a 1080ti. Even the 8700k will bottleneck it in some cases.

What Voltage are you overclocking the CPU on? Seems like you arent giving it enough voltage.

1.4 volts at 3.9 or 4 ghz should be doable.

You system is allready very good. I struggle to see why you would upgrade? The gain is very small for the very real cost of new Mobo, Ram, CPU

Forgot to mention, my current cooler is a NH-D15. Main reason I want to go with the kraken is the looks. The noctua isn't really "eye candy", by my opinion, even though its good. And upgrading to the kraken is not possible in this case, so might as well buy a new one.

I don't think the problem in overclocking is on the CPU. I have tried many guides, but this motherboard is just super hard to overclock on without it boot looping and reloading the backup bios. I'm so tired of this board being such a hassle to work on!

Also, in gaming performance I have seen youtube videos benchmarking different games, comparing ryzen to intel. The difference in fps from the 1600 to the 8700k is almost 40%, which is a lot.

The new parts will cost me (converted from NOK to USD) around $1460. If I buy a used GTX 1070 for $420, and manage to sell my old computer with it for around $1350 (that's what similar builds go for), the cost of this upgrade is only $530. For that price, I will get the satisfaction of building a new rig, a better looking pc, and better performance.

Regarding the ram speeds, on the Norwegian market the difference in price for the 2400 and 3200mhz G.skill is just $15, so there's no point in going for the 2400mhz sticks.

I have thought about just swapping the mobo and the CPU, but those two parts alone will cost me $690, and I doubt I'll be able to sell the old parts for more than $280. So that will be a $410 upgrade, without getting the Kraken cooler, G.skill ram, and enjoyment of doing a full new build.

Does this make sense, or am I completely insane? Haha

Running games at 1440p on a 144hz monitor. Really want those extra fps I will gain from a 8700k (I only use this computer for gaming.

I tried some overclocking again now, and I managed to get it up and running at 3.9Ghz with 1.4V. I have tried this earlier but just got crashes. So that is a plus (if it stays stable), but its still low considering the speeds I can get with the 8700k. Getting the ram speed anywhere up from 2133 seems to be impossible. I just get boot loops and it trows me back into bios with an error, or in worst case it just goes black and I need to reset CMOS, or it reloads the backup bios. Any ideas why my ram wont go higher? It is rated at 3000mhz. Did a memtest long time ago, nothing wrong with them
