Hello, so for the past month or so I have been troubleshooting my computer due to no post. the reason this happened was because I was cleaning my computer and I put the 4 pin power connector from the 20+4 into my cpu power ?, and lets just say a ton of smoke came out what looked to be the motherboard. Before ordering another motherboard, all the fans would stay spinning just no display or lighting of the caps lock on the keyboard (no boot) but after ordering the motherboard my psu makes a clicking sound, I’m experienced so please don’t say things like, “are all your connections secure” etc. just your opinion on the next thing I should buy next. I might have shorted the cpu or messed up the power output on my psu. Please get back quick. I’m moving soon and my mom isn’t gonna let me take a dead computer till I prove it works

Specs:

Corsair HX 850 psu

Amd a-10 7850k

MSI r9 390

8 gb ddr3

samsung 120 gb ssd

That computer is dead as can be and you'll have to test each bit by itself to find out what's truly dead but you'll be lucky if you didn't fry the board and CPU together.

Wait, is it even possible to put a 20+4 pin in a CPU header... I thought those were key'd differently exactly to prevent this kind of things from happening.

In any case, any or all of the following may be dead:
Motherboard.
CPU.

RAM.

Power Supply.

It's possible that the GPU was also fried, but I doubt it, if possible test things like RAM, GPU and drives in another PC.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 3700x / GPU: Asus Radeon RX 6750XT OC 12GB RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 2x16GB DDR4-3200
MOBO: MSI B450m Gaming Plus NVME: Corsair MP510 240GB / Case: TT Core v21 PSU: Seasonic 750W / OS: Bazzite

Yep it's dead. Surely you would've noticed that was the wrong harness since it'll have a giant 20pin connector dangling with the extra 4 pin connector... Plus the pins shouldn't even fit. The layout of the pin shrouds are completely different.

You should try replacing the power supply first as if there's something wrong with the current one as a result of this debacle, it could end up frying new parts you try with it so better be safe than sorry and start with that.
