Can a gold leaf replace thermal paste

not likely very well as gold isn't a great thermal conductor.  There is liquid metal if you are looking for something that will really really work.

Gold isn't the best heat conductor, and thermal paste is cheap and easy to find. Mind you, gold is expensive so that leaf will cost you a pretty penny.

It’s thermal conductivity is low. Thus, gold is terrible at conducting heat. You could better use a silver foil if you really insist in using an expensive metal foil like material.

High purity gold leaf is very soft and will mold to surfaces well so it would work but there are other products like liquid metal and those carbon thermal pads which would do similarly well.
