This is the build that I'm thinking of making, it's going to be for gaming, eventually VR when I upgrade the graphics card(I'll do that separately once I've got this built). I'll be using one monitor(already got, though it's 4:3 so if anyone has recommendations for a decent, cheapish one)

I'm trying to keep the build under £1000, the graphics card, wireless card and a 2 TB hard drive are getting pulled out of my current prebuilt which I'm replacing because it's 5-7 years old and the motherboard in it isn't a standard size. Current specs are https://docs.google.com/document/d/1aHmM1wOXGAHwN5RIbtLKSwpH6n-obSj5rQ1BlxUBLsA/edit?usp=drivesdk

Does anyone have suggestions for improvements or know of issues with it? (things like RAM clearance since the CPU cooler is huge, probably overkill)

If there's information I'm missing then let me know, I'll add it.

The CPU is a terrible one. It's based on old architecture and will just hold you back. Go with a 2400G and X470 board so you have easy compatibility. Faster RAM is a must with Ryzen and I added a better SSD

That's my current PC specs, it's a lot unknowns because it's a prebuilt from years ago.

Ah ok, I didn't know that. Thanks, the changes you've made look pretty good for the price. Was I right in calling the CPU cooler I chose overkill?

You can get the Windows key elsewhere for cheaper.

Replaced the CPU with a much better one, and the GPU as well as it is not going to serve you well in VR since you are planning for it. Also replaced the RAM for faster speeds and GBs.

The stock cooler of the CPU will be plenty also for some mild overclocking (they are not crap like Intel's).

Added a 16:9 75Hz monitor which still fits in your 1k budget.

Yah, the nice thing about the AMD CPUs as well is they come with pretty solid coolers so different ones are only needed if you plan heavy overclocking in most cases.

Though I still recommend using a 3rd party cooler, always great to get your temps down a bit more. My recommendation for a budget cooler is either the Zalman CNPS5X Performa or a Hyper212 EVO, tried both in my FX 6300 based rig (the fx series were known for thermal issues after all) and found both kept the temps at lower 20s idle, paired with thermal grizzly kryonaut paste. The CNPS5X performa cools a bit better and here's the COOL bit for me: I got the CNPS5X performa I'm using out of a quad socket opteron server I have, still got 3 of them tucked away.
