So I am in the info gathering portion of my build currently, and I plan to run a Ryzen 2700x on a X470 Gigabyte Aorus Ultra Gaming Mobo.  My question is after reading the memory support section of the Mobos product page it seems very restrictive as far as memory goes.  I would like to run 16GB (8GBx2) of DDR4 3200.  If the memory is not specifically mentioned in the memory support document, will it not work, not reach the advertised speeds or something to a greater or lesser extent.  I feel very dumb for this question but I cant seem to find a clear cut answer but since the prices of RAM are so high i would rather have more options.  The purpose of this build is going to be a heavily expandable 4K PLEX media server using the NZXT H440 (for all those drive bays).

Thanks

While it remains true that Ryzen benefits from higher speed memory, moreso than other platforms, for a PLEX server, it really doesn't matter, since you won't be putting that significant of a load on the system. What I mean by that is, high speed memory on Ryzen really benefits in scenarios with high overall system utilization, like graphics rendering or gaming, rather than content consumption. I also wouldn't fret too much over the qualified vendors list (QVL) for your memory or motherboard. RAM is one of those things that, if it doesn't work, you can just return it or ask for a refund from the manufacturer. Any good memory manufacturer, like Crucial, Corsair, Adata, G.Skill or Kingston should just refund or replace the kit if it doesn't work, no questions asked.

If it were my build, and it's just going to be a PLEX server, I'd probably get something like a Ryzen 3 processor on a lower end motherboard, and opt for more memory rather than faster memory. I would also consider getting a network interface card (NIC) from Intel, the pretty much established vendor for prosumer NICs, so that way, my network isn't going to be a bottleneck (more often than not, the network is the weak link in the chain). Hope this helps!

pretty sure you just can just get a kit of ryzen 2 compatible ram. i got a z370 Aorus GAMING 5 with 16gb ddr4 Ripjaws V, my ram wasnt in the compatible list, but xmp and everything work, except for the gskills led's on the ram, but i got enough rgb in my system that it doesnt make any difference
