So there are rumours that Turing cards will be available to the public in August or September.

I am a student , and I can only game freely in summer holiday. In schooldays? My parents just don't allow me to play video games. (Tho I will play at the night when they are watching soap operas)

I am wondering should I get a 1070 Ti or wait for 1170.

Turing sounds nice but if it really launches in August , I actually lose a whole month gaming.

Also, the next semester is critical to my study as it is similar to IELTS, I might not even have time to play.

EDIT: I also have a silly question.

If I somehow buy a RX 550 and upgrade it to a 1060 then 1080 , is it even worth it?

What do you expect the new card to do?  What's your old card?

While I also expect 11 series to come this summer, I dont think the price will be reasonable until the end of the year (and that's being optimistic). I'd rather recommend Pascal.

CPU: i7-2600K 4751MHz 1.44V (software) --> 1.47V at the back of the socket Motherboard: Asrock Z77 Extreme4 (BCLK: 103.3MHz) CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D15 RAM: Adata XPG 2x8GB DDR3 (XMP: 2133MHz 10-11-11-30 CR2, custom: 2203MHz 10-11-10-26 CR1 tRFC:230 tREFI:14000) GPU: Asus GTX 1070 Dual (Super Jetstream vbios, +70(2025-2088MHz)/+400(8.8Gbps)) SSD: Samsung 840 Pro 256GB (main boot drive), Transcend SSD370 128GB PSU: Seasonic X-660 80+ Gold Case: Antec P110 Silent, 5 intakes 1 exhaust Monitor: AOC G2460PF 1080p 144Hz (150Hz max w/ DP, 121Hz max w/ HDMI) TN panel Keyboard: Logitech G610 Orion (Cherry MX Blue) with SteelSeries Apex M260 keycaps Mouse: BenQ Zowie FK1

Sadly , I have no dedicated cards at all right now.

It really depends on which kind of game you are playing and at which resolution and framerate you want to play.

That said, based on your story if you need one for the summer I would just buy it now, especially because for the moment it's all just rumors on the new cards and we don't know how the market will react to the launch.

I am very new to silky smooth gaming tbh , I will play Battlefield , No Mans Sky , GTA V etc.

I am not sure do I need 144hz monitor , but it will be 1080p for sure.

It will depend a bit also on your CPU but in my experience for 1080p the 1070Ti is going to be more than enough for those games, you will get more than 60fps at the highest settings.

CPU i5-8400

I don't need maxed out , just somewhere between medium and high.

Yeah then wait for others to answer you but in my opinion a 1070Ti is more than enough for that and I actually think you could get very good result even with just a 1060 6GB, though the 1070Ti will surely be more future proof.

Saw some wolfgang's vids , 1060 6gb might not be able to do it

E.g.

By the way Swiss just thank you for keep replying me. I have edited the original question , would you answer it too? I am new to gpus

I don't know what you mean by "upgrading" but in my opinion is not worth it. Unless you are really in a budget I would stay away from those AMD cards and just go straight to the 1060 or 1070Ti. The performances of the RX550 will be much worse for what you are asking and those cards basically have zero resale value & market at the moment (and even less in the near future).

Someone may also point out that if you go for the 1070Ti it might be worth to get a 1080 since the price different is very low but based on my experience the performance gain is less than 10% and the 1070Ti has better resale potential.

Yeah , that is 2 questions. For the Turing one, with a slight overclock , 1070 Ti actually equals to 1080(at least this is what I've heard of)

For the worthy question, that is for my friend , he is indeed very tight budget. You can imagine that he only saves USD$10 per week

RX 550 is only good for the least demanding games at 1080p, while AAA games wont run smoothly unless you completely trash the settings.

The thing is, the best upgrade option is to get the best you can afford, then stick with it till it breaks or becomes slow by that time's standard. Doing multiple upgrades is just like marrying and divorcing: Your bank account will bleed till it dries up.

so he should grab a rx 550 and trash the settings then wait until he can afford , say , 1160?
