So i just built a new system a couple of weeks ago, coming from a locked i5-4440 ddr3 ram no ssd etc...

So i got a i7-8700k
Gigabyte Aorus gaming 7 MOBO
Corsair h100i for my cpu cooling
16(for now) ddr4 2666mhz
Samesung evo 1tb drive for OS and a couple other for other stuff

Anyways, im using speccy to monitor temps since its a new system to see where things always run at, idle gaming etc. As we speak right now with chrome and google play music running the temp is at 39-40 c which is normal for idle. This is like 10 deg more then my i5, and easily while gaming runs upper 50's low 60's depending on the game. During firestrike or benchmarking upper 70's and 80's with spike as high as 90 c so far. These temps are all at stock clock speeds also. So, using liquid cooling, are these temps ok? How much different are air cooled temps with a stock so to say cooler?

Thanks.

For what it's worth for now I'm following corsairs suggestion and have radiator at the top of case then fans mounted with motor brace side mounted to radiator/top of case open fin part of fan inside case of pc.

I'll have to check when I get home. But everything is at stock settings if that means anything.

If your motherboard has multi core enhance enabled the 8700k can get pretty hot even under a mid-range AIO cooler.  I would consider your temps expected if the feature is turned on.  In most scenarios you won't really see all cores turbo like that, but if it's really a concern you could disable the feature on your motherboard.

I would still consider mid 80s under full load 'safe'.

I bought an i7 8700k and i only had a Hyper 212 EVO, which is an "okay" cooler, but when i first booted up the system everything at stock... everything i do just spikes the temp to 99C and starts thermal throttling like crazy, i was so worried that the Hyper 212 EVO wasnt enough, even though ive turned off MCE (multicore enhancement) temps were still crazy and thermal throttling.

so i decided to do a manual overclock and see what i get, i have mine sitting at 4.6 Ghz at 1.16V and the temps never go above 80C with Cinebench :) im pretty happy about that.

i've also read that all i7-8700k's can overclock to 4.6 Ghz with 1.16V so give it a try :) dont forget to adjust LLC (load line calibration), my voltage is at 1.16 stable, doesnt fluctiuate.

unfortunately stock settings just push the voltage way too high :/

what are you guys using to OC, intel extreme tuning utility or the mobo's bios? I've never oc'd a cpu, i mean i used gigabytes auto tun which was 5g and it was stable. I just dont want to give the wrong thing some volts lol i see core offset voltage and core voltage...?

what is the voltage at? most mobo's like to set a to high voltage for stock clocks

when i open intel extreme tuning it says volytage is at 0, so whatever stock is then?

@O9B0666 do what syn2112 said and dial in a voltage of 1.16 (or 1.2) and a frequency across all cores of 4.6Ghz. do this in the bios, never oc in software as it is never as good as the bios itself.

don't use software to overclock, always use BIOS, im gonna tell you step by step how to do this.

Go into BIOS

Advanced Frequency Settings:
CPU Clock Ratio: set that to 46
Extreme Memory Profile: set that to Profile1 (if you haven't already)

now go into Advanced CPU Core Settings:
scroll down and disable all of this:

Intel Speed Shift Technology (you can keep this enabled if you want your CPU to downclock itself on idle when using Balanced Power Plan in windows, but if you use Performance Power plan it will stick to 4.6ghz)
CPU Enhanced Halt(C1E)
C3 State Support

C6/C7 State Support

C8 State Support

C10 State Support

Ring to Core Offsent (Down Bin)

CPU EIST Function

Race to Halt

Energy Efficient Turbo

Voltage Optimization

now go back to the main page and then go to
Advanced Voltage Settings:
go to Advanced Power Settings:

and set CPU Vcore Loadline Calibration to "Turbo"
Go back to Advanced Voltage Settings
then go to CPU Core Voltage Control and set CPU Vcore to 1.16V

then press F10 to save and exit

thats it :) youre done
also don't forget to uninstall that EasyTune software so it won't mess with the overclock you did in BIOS

so i was putsing around in the bios, and came accross a fan speed tab....low and behold on my MOBO the fan connectors were set to quiet. So i go back into my pc and low and behold my temps are way down accross the board. This agaijn is at idle basically chrome and google play music for desktops and speccy are all thats open and heres my new temps.

Im running corsair link on quiet mode, with the pump on quiet mode at the moment, and i can slightly hear the fans now, where before i couldnt. So, putting it on performance mode theres noit much a difference, on idle ill stress test and firestrike test now to see if any differences.

Also, thanks for the tips how to OC, i will try those vs. software oc, thanks again.

I tried this. When i tried to mess with clock ratio, which was set at 44, and auto it was highlighted and not blacked out like some stuff, but i could not change this at all. Nor would it allow me to change CPU Vcore Loadline Calibration but everything else would allow me to change it, so for now i just didnt save and exited.

Also, do i change the core offset voltage too or just core voltage?

i think you need to type the number as you would in text, or maybe use + or - buttons, i dont know but you should be able to change those.

When I follow the Gigabyte guide (as listed above), I fail to see a boot drive with a blue screen of death. I even cut back and just tried to boot with manual 5.0 and 1.2v, no dice.  The auto OC for 5.0 works fine at 1.35v, so staying with that.  Will play around more.

With the Thermaltake 360mm AIO, I stress at 84-86c.  Idle at 27-29c.
