personally i would probaly go ryzen.  While intel is better for gaming, you will get better price to preformance from ryzen.  I would pick up either a 1600 or one of the new 2000 series ryzen chips and save your money from going intel

As posted in your other thread by someone else, I’d just upgrade the processor to what you can afford that fits that socket and add some more ram or a ssd if you don’t have one.

If you can get an i7 6700 or 7700 in there then why replace the motherboard too? It’s not like those processors are even that old.

Im rocking a i7 3770 and don’t even care to think about upgrading. With my 1070 it plays my games just fine.

Its not like back in the day where a computer was outdated in a year or two.

if it was me I’d sell the i3 for $50, spend $130 on an i5 6500, for a cost of $80. Then sell the 1060 and buy a 1070.

You only “need” a modest cpu upgrade and a gpu upgrade would serve you more than upgrading everything else and keeping the 3gb 1060.

I’m saying if you don’t like the performance for games you still won’t be happy if you focus on the cpu. I doubt a i7 8700 would be as big of a boost as you’d want for the price it would cost.

Sell the i3 and the 1060 and use the money to help fund a used i5 or i7 off eBay that your system can use and a used 1070. Bang for the buck in games, that would provide the most boost and still stay in budget which I believe you originally said in the other thread was around $300 out of pocket.

I7 6700 on eBay $200 - the $50 for the i3 for $150 out of pocket.

1070 on eBay $360 - the $175 for the 1060 for $185 out of pocket.

so for $335 you’ll have a noticeable upgrade.

If you do the coffee lake upgrade it’ll cost more and not help unless you are cpu bottlenecked because you will still have the same 3gb 1060 that is probably the bottleneck you currently have.

I’d just buy and sell on eBay because of the buyer protection and let someone else comment on the cpu. I had an i5 3550 and was happy personally. I only upgraded to a i7 3770 because the htpc I bought had it and it made sense to swap the cpu’s Vs leaving the i7 in a unit that just plays video files.
