The monitor can only process so much data at a time. So if it's say a 1080p monitor, then the amount of data it can crunch at once is probably about 356 MB/sec. But if you lowered the resolution to 1600x900, then at 60Hz it's only using about 248 MB/sec. Bumping this up to 75 Hz only brings it up to about 309 MB/sec.
