Good day gents,

I have been brainstorming on what path the next PC upgrade will take me.

Current:

Case: Lenovo y710 Cube

CPU: i5 6400

MBoard: Mini ITX H170 (stock)

RAM: 2 x Crucial 8gb DDR4 2400mhz

GPU: 1060 6GB

Storage: 2x 240gb EVO 850, 1x WD 1TB HDD

Now the hard bit im researching and cant find a definitive answer for me:

Looking to upgrade the CPU, but cant do that unless i change the MB in the process.

Given that conditions id go for a ATX mboard (more PCIE and SATA Ports, reason made clear below)...and the case would be probably AIR 540 or HAF XB EVO (air 540 has a bit of HDD bays issue, as im planning on moving my HDDS from my NAS to the new PC, hence 2 more HDDS with 3tb each.)

The problem now becomes the CPU + Mboard combo, since id go for CoffeeLake or Ryzen2.

My usage of a pc consists of Gaming, Autocad and some 3D BIM programs and some movie editing, but nothing heavy (ocasional) . Recently bought an Oculus (getting more USB 3.0 in the form of a PCI E card helps) , and for fallout 4 vr it states it needs minimum i7 Skylake, and id want to proof for the future games too, on PC and Oculus. Now i always have 2 monitors (1080p, 60hz) and even when i game, something else is running on the 2nd screen, so i dont think the difference in frames between intel and ryzen are going to affect me at that resolution and frequency.

Both worlds kinda have something i want, but not sure what would be ideal. Benchmarks dont tell me that much, compared to real life situations of using a PC.

Im stuck like Sheldon between Xbox and PS4.

Why not just get a 6700/7700 and not have to change mobos?

Make sure to quote me or tag me when responding to me, or I might not know you replied! Examples:

Buy whatever product is best for you, not what product is "best" for the market.

Interested in computer architecture? Still in middle or high school? P.M. me!

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.

Budget wouldn't be a big of a problem (if i can cut costs i wouldn't mine ofc), id limit myself up to 300£ on a CPU and up to 200£  on a Mboard. the rest i can allocate it as separate. Thats why ive been having my eye on the 8600, 8700, 2700x as i hoped to future proof a little bit. Ryzen seem to promise same socket and compatibility for a while... intel is a bit shadier in that regards.

As for build, im keeping my GPU and RAM, its just the CPU and MB i cant seem to decide on, and all reviews im seeing are about benchmarks, not living with said CPUs

I was thinking about that too, but gaining a few more SATA ports (current 3, but id need 5) and USB 3.0 ports gain would be nice too if i buy another sensor for oculus.
