I noticed my download speed was incredibly slow. My current setup is ethernet from my router. I tried hooking up my computer directly to my modem. My download speed on http://www.speedtest.net/ went from 6-7mbs to around 100mbs. So im guessing its a problem with my router? All these tests were done without anyone else using the internet. It is also worth noting that my download speed on my s8 phone on wifi is faster than my computer.

I also tested another computer connected to the same house and the results were the same.

SOLVED: Went into router settings. Turned off "qos" or quality of service.

Router: Netgear r7000

What router do you have? Did you use the same wire when testing directly against the modem vs. against the router?

I don't think the wire is the problem because i tested the internet speed on another computer on the router which had a different cable and the results were the same.

Try it with the same cable -- it's possible (?) that the wires that were ran were made very long/poorly.

There are multiple factors that go into this. I also have 100 Mbps internet but only get around 5-6:

  1. Server-side:
    1. Server have a set bandwidth they have to share between all of their clients, so on some downloads you will get 500 Kbps and some will get you around 6 MBPS.
  2. Reported bandwidth.
    1. Try a download on your computer that gets around 5/6 Mbps. Open up Task Manager and go to Network. You can see that your computer is actually taking in around 60-70 MBPS but only reporting 5-6. Write speeds, packet loss, and other things come into play here.
  3. Cabling
    1. A CAT-5 cable is rated for at most 100 Mbps, CAT 5e is rated for 1000 Mbps. Make sure you have the right rating of cabling for your computer in as short of a cable as possible. I recommend CAT-6, but a well-rated CAT-5e cable on Amazon should do you just fine.
  4. It's normal.
    1. All computers do this. Mine does this, yours does this. Always look at task manager when you're downloading.

This was on Wi-Fi downloading Ubuntu:

Yet Firefox is reporting 6MBPS.

I imagine if I plugged it in I'd have more, but idk I'm 3 feet from my router right now (laptop, guys :P)

I agree, sometimes it only says like 32mbps on my task manager when i am downloading something.

@DaJakerBoss Your units are all over the place. Please keep in mind that B and b are completely different units by 8x. A capital B means Bytes while a lower case b is bits. 1B = 8b and data is measured in bits when transferred, even though some things like Steam, some browsers, etc will display in bytes so it will appear to be 1/8th of rated speed. Cat5 is also rated for 100Mbps and Cat5e is rated for 1000Mbps

Edit:

so wait the browser and taskmgr are reporting the same speed 2 different ways?

Sure it's a small thing but it's one of those things that, as a network engineer, bugs the crap out of me :P

@Elclid

Could you poke around in your router settings and see if there is anything similar to "packet counter" or "performance monitor" turned on? It doesn't really do anything but count packets that go in and out but I've seen other people who've had that simple option tank performance.

I couldn't find anything. Nothing on this thread has helped lol. The internet was fine a couple months ago.
