I have 2 computers for gaming and they both serve different purposes

 

I use a 165Hz 2560x1440 monitor on one for FPS gaming and on the other I use a 3440x1440 100hz ultrawide monitor for open world / racing sims / light productivity

 

 

I have two coffee lake CPUs -  8700K and an 8400 (non K) CPU and for GPUs  a GTX 1080 and a GTX 1080TI.

 

Both computers have 16gb RAM / NVME SSDs and 850 watt PSUs.

 

 

My question is which CPU and GPU combo should I use for each computer for optimum performance?

Assuming you mean FPS gaming as in the likes of CS:GO or similar then I'd recommend going 8400 + 1080 for that one reserving the 8700k and 1080ti for the ultrawide because open world AAA games can be pretty demanding on ultra.

Just plug another cable to the 1080ti with 8700k and sell that other one (or give to a friend or family member, whatever).

You ever stop to think that the computers might not actually be in the same place? I have one in my house and I have an apartment in the city where I stay when at work during the week. I am well aware that two monitors can be plugged in the same computer.

You'll likely need the 8700k to hit 165 FPS, while the 8400 should be enough for 100FPS. That said, some games will reach 300FPS on a potato, while others will struggle for 100 on any PC.

Hence, I'd suggest you test by yourself, with the games that matter to you. Using something like Aferburner, set it to display FPS, GPU usage and CPU usage, and play the games at the intended settings. See if you are able to hit the desired framerates, and whether the GPU or the CPU is maxed out (bear in mind that in games not using all cores you may see less than 100% CPU usage even if the cores used are maxed out and holding you back).

 

Depending on what you see you may choose a different combination: the higher resolution, lower refresh rate monitor may justify an 8400+1080ti config, especially if the FPS game isn't that demanding for the GPU but you find yourself needing the 8700K to benefit from the 165Hz panel.
