So I have this Gigabyte 1080 G1 for about a year now and noticed that even though my case has very good airflow(2x 140 intake noctua fans and 3 exhaust) it's still really hot when gaming. If I put the fan profile on auto the card idles at arround 46°C so I had to setup a custom fan curve to reduce the idle temp to around 39°C and it works. But when under load the card can reach anywhere between 75°C up to 80°C! and the thermal paste is replaced with conductonaut :| the fans will run pretty loud and I don't know what else I can do.

Looking up some similar cards on youtube like the Zotac 1080 mini the video on youtube says it doesn't run hotter than 65°C ????? and this card has 3 fans compared to that smaller card it should perform better?

or maybe this is normal for this card and I'm just wrong?

P.S - my room is usually around 23°C - 25°C

Video cards are designed to run as fast as possible before it hits one of the following:

  • Thermal limits (GPU is getting too hot)
  • Overclocking limits (The GPU boost can't reliably go further)
  • Power draw limits (the video card can't safely draw any more power)

Usually the last two will be hit first before the first one, assuming the cooling system is up to snuff. Most of the time it is. In the case of GPUs that run cooler, it may be they have a different profile that prevents them from running as fast due a more aggressive thermal limit. For example, my CPU appears to aggressively scale back its turbo frequency under a heavy load like Prime95 to maintain ~65-70C, despite my cooler meeting the TDP requirement by over 50% (note this is with MCE on)

As an aside though, the GPU is not in a thermal throttle condition unless it cannot maintain base clock speeds.

80C is pretty normal for a GPU however around 72 is the average for the G1 ( this is probably an open air test bench there so you should be in the green ) long as its not > 90C it should be fine, If your really concerned you could take away the factory overclock on the G1, also FYI even with good fans the truth is it might be starved for air flow depending on the front of the case if its like a open mesh or has a glass front and intact vents to the side.

This seems extremely low to me for under load temp.

Have you cleaned out your heat sink with air lately?

I know its a different card but my 1060 6gb hits 34 idle and 81 under load with a custom fan curve with room temp around 21c

I'm not sure if having more exhaust than you have intakes is any good. Very prone to sucking in dust through the gaps.

Like everyone said, 80 is totally normal on air. No damage will happen here. If you want quieter fans, make a custom fan curve that doesn't go above 85% fans.

lol 85% on this thing already sounds like a vacuum cleaner. I have it so it doesn't go past 60% and it's still annoying as fuck.

Well you don’t want the fans up and you don’t want it hot? Could get a 1050. Prolly get rid of the card or address the airflow.

You bought the wrong card if you want cool and quiet. Replace the cooler with an Accelero for cool and quiet.
