How to use my M.2 SATA III Drive

seanos_nachos

So I recently was given a 240GB Intel SSD 5, which is an 80mm M.2 SSD which uses the SATA III interface. The motherboard I currently have is a Gigabyte Z87-D3HP, which I'm fairly certain doesn't have an M.2 slot.

Does anybody know if I can use an adapter to utilise this SSD from a PCIE slot? And would I be able to boot to this SSD, given my motherboard doesn't support M.2? Also if so, do you have any recommendations for adapters?

For reference I only have one graphics card currently in my PCIEX16 slot and no other expansion cards. Thanks in advance!

You need an M.2 expansion card. Fairly inexpensive. Just make sure you get one that is properly keyed for your drive and yes you should be able to use it like any other drive in your system

I would have to agree with the other two people who replied. The expansion cards work fairly well from what i've heard. I was thinking of getting one for a boot drive. There are also these types of converters aswell.

If you don't want any of those, you could always try and sell the m.2 and buy a sata or pci ssd!
