96W build thoughts

porina

Ok you might be wondering about the subject. 96W seems awfully specific. Basically I already have a PicoPSU-160-XT but it only puts out 8A continuous on 12V rail, for a nominal 96W.

Build will go into a case from the distant past and will be limited in both space and airflow, so keeping low power isn't a bad idea anyway. It will themed around Elite Dangerous specifically, so that has to run on it. I don't think it is very CPU demanding but the last time I tested it was before Horizons update which was a loooooong time ago.

I will be using a GT 1030 (30W TDP), so assuming everything else doesn't significantly use power from 12V line, I have about 66W for the CPU. I know TDP is not equal to max power draw, but it's what I have to work with. I'm looking to avoid buying new stuff.

Options (already have below CPUs):

i3-4150T - 2c4t 3.0 GHz, 35W TDP, already have mobo

i3-4360 - 2c4t 3.7 GHz, 54W TDP, already have mobo

i3-6100 - 2c4t 3.7 GHz, 51W TDP, but I'd need to buy a new mobo to fit

i5-4570S - 4c4t 2.9 base 3.6 turbo, 65W TDP, already have mobo

i5-5675C - 4c4t 3.1 base 3.5 turbo, 65W TDP, but I'd need to buy a new mobo to fit

R5 1600 - 6c12t 3.2 base 3.6 turbo, 65W TDP, but I'd need to buy a new mobo to fit

R7 1700 - 8c16t 3.0 base 3.7 turbo, 65W TDP, but I'd need to buy a new mobo to fit

If I had to get a new mobo it would ideally be ITX format, or I can get away with the smaller end of micro-ATX. It doesn't have to support OC. I have a small H81 mobo already that only supports Haswell CPUs. Alternatively is there another cheap and low power Haswell compatible CPU? I've not looked at the E3 range for example... will do that now.

Id go 5675c and use the igpu, its a pretty darn good onboard gpu and should do what you need to do, and will work on your h81 board.

i would replace the ryzen 5 and 7 with the ryzen 5 2400g since neither of those cpu's have an igpu which you'll need to display stuff to the screen at all and its pretty solid for a 65w cpu (the 2200g would be easier to cool though due to its lower clock speed since you said in a tight spot, i don't know the temp difference by heart)

You should just use the R5 2400G APU

The mobo doesn't list any Broadwell support, which I understood was limited on 8x series chipsets. Plus the iGPU is still likely to stink. It's not bad for an iGPU at the time, but it is getting on a bit and will be far slower than the 1030.

As said I already have a 1030 to go in it, which will be much faster. Also it would not do well on my "avoid buying more stuff" part.

I just had a quick look at Haswell Xeons, only two fit the power profile. One is silly expensive, the other is 4c8t but 2.0 base 3.0 turbo so rather slow...

Sell it and get an R5 2400G lol

It has about the same performance as the APU

Otherwise just use the i3 T

It should work on that board, update the bios and give it a try if you have it.

Gpu wise, its suprisingly fast, still a bit slower than the 1030, but not that much slow, probably about 50-80% of the speed.

Were we looking at the same reviews? Outside of AMD friendly titles it wasn't even close to a 1030.

Base on Tim Spy scores, nearer 50%, and I'm not sure the 1030 is "enough" in the first place. I might bench it in place before I move it to check.

Were you looking at a review with single channel memory or something?

Thanks for the vids, I quickly scanned through them again and ok, they're a lot closer than I recall. What was I looking at before? Or maybe I was confusing the 1030 with another card. Both of those are on my 'tube sub list so I must have seen those at the time.

It still means I'd have to consider buying more gear, but I'll keep it in consideration while I check out pricing.

Because they were most accessible at the time, I've started testing on i3-4150T + 1030. If this proves insufficient I'll look again at the other options.
