Good time to get a gaming laptop ?

I move a lot and I need a gaming laptop is now a good time to get one ?

My budget can afford a GTX1060 laptop is it a good idea to get one with that GPU at this date ?

Or the new generation of GPUs is nearly here and I should wait ?

Welcome to the forum!

I'd see if you can find a laptop that has a Coffeelake CPU and a full GTX 1060.

If your budget isn't that high, you can get last gen Dell Inspiron 15 7000 series gaming laptops for pretty cheap. I'd definitely push to get the newer CPU though, it's a lot better than the last generation. You can always wait and get something better.

Probably the best machine at the moment. It's only a 1060 Max-Q variant, but that's just as fast as the previous generation's GTX 980M, of which is still no slouch for any game right now. You'd get the newer CFL-H i7 too. :D Yey hexacore goodness. :3

Yeah I had the 7577 with the 1060 and it was a beast...for the price anyway. So the G5 and G7 should be even better because more cores.

I'm curious to know if Windows allows you to configure the TDP in the power options for the new stuff too. :o I love that I can have Windows run my CPU as a 35w TDP chip. Helps me save a bit more battery too. :D I manage close to 8 hours with my configurations and tweaks. :3

What exactly is your budget? I'm looking to buy a laptop myself. I'm a student. Need a laptop for both school and gaming.
Started a thread on here and i got quite a few different recommendations for my budget of $1000, If thats your budget as well the following list may help
1) Asus ROG GL502VM -> i7-7700HQ, GTX 1060 3GB with G-Sync, 12GB RAM, 1TB HDD (usually goes on sale at best buy online for as low as $1000)
2) Asus FX503VM-> i7-7700HQ, GTX 1060 3GB with G-Sync, 16GB RAM, 1TB HDD and 128GB SSD (goes on sale on amazon for $1000)
3) Dell G7 7588 -> i7-8750HQ, GTX 1060 6GB, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD (on dell website for $1,080)

DO NOT GET AN ACER PREDATOR HELIOS 300
i don't own one but the reviews ive read all complain about poor quality control as they often ship with issues with some people even reporting dead GPU's after just 3 months

[Incase your budget is $1500 ->  Asus ROG GL702VS: i7-7700HQ, GTX 1070 8GB with G-Sync, 12GB RAM,1TB HDD and 128GB SSD and a 75Hz display]

i personally think with $1000 the GL502VM is the best bet, but i hope by summer there's more options to choose from

Also if you end up settling with something else stay away from anything with a 1050 or 1050Ti unless you have no choice.
They are now in a lower tier group if you're looking to play any AAA titles at 1080 with reasonably high presets

All models above are toasters. Terrible cooling. Also Asus gaming laptops have poor QC and QA.

As far as I can tell, you can. Nothing different with the new ones. 8 hours is pretty impressive though

Can you please tell me examples for cases with dead GPUs? I've owned the Helios for 2 months and returned it for the same reason and I'm thinking about getting it again but I'm worried that the problem is frequent.

Try this link and scroll down a bit -> https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Predator-i7-7700HQ-1060-6GB-G3-571-77QK/product-reviews/B06Y4GZS9C/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_viewopt_kywd?ie=UTF8&filterByStar=one_star&reviewerType=all_reviews&pageNumber=1&filterByKeyword=gpu#reviews-filter-bar

Also provided 2 screenshots. Hope this helps with your purchasing decision. I've cancelled the Helios 300 from my list of possible purchases
