So the new OnePlus 6 is due to launch on May 16, right around the corner, it is the first time I have thought about upgrading in quite some time.

I currently own and use a OnePlus 2, but after seeing the increased prices every year, yet coming up short on features, I was thinking about heading in another direction. Then, while I was looking up specs on the soon-to-be-released Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium, I came across the OnePlus 6 article.

Not only will it be the first OnePlus device to be water proof/resistant, but they are also increasing the screen-to-body ratio even further than the OnePlus 5T, and this generation is also supposed to bring back the MicroSD slot as well as NFC communication.

The phone is said to use the latest Qualcomm SnapDragon 845 CPU, 6-8GB of RAM depending on the model purchased, and 64, 128, or 256GB of built-in storage. It will also feature a powerful 20MP dual-camera setup.

So quite literally, other than the screen resolution, which I actually enjoy being lower because on something as small as a phone screen, you will never see the difference anyways, and the lower resolution will benefit from increased battery life and less lag; the OP6 looks to have specs identical to the Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+. The OP6 is even supposed to have a glass black as well.

Now of course, due to new features, the OP6 will have a higher price tag than last year. It is said that the 64GB model is likely to start at $550USD, with the 128GB and 256GB models coming in at $600USD and $700USD respectively.

To be honest, with such high built-in capacities available, I have no idea why anyone would even need an SD Card slot anymore. Even with half my entire music collection and 2 seasons of Rick and Morty on board, I still have about half of the storage on board my 64GB OP2 still available. But hey, more features are always welcome.

In short, when comparing the OP6 to the Galaxy S9 and S9+ release prices, it looks like the OP6 is going to be a true "bargain" once again, something people have been complaining about with recent generations due to price increases, especially with the OP5 and OP5T iterations.

So what do you guys think? Do you think the new OnePlus 6 is going to be a great value? Is anyone else looking at picking up a new phone soon? What phones are you interested in?

Another rumor site I just found suggests that the OnePlus 6 will feature the ability to disable the rear fingerprint reader and instead imbed the fingerprint sensor in the screen, much like the iPhone X.

Oh boy, I really hope this isnt just a rumor. Thats a feature I have wanted for years, but is only just now becoming a reality in certain phones.

Personally, I'd get something else.

I used to like OnePlus but I've lately only recommended them to people who want to tweak their phones with custom firmware

The Workhorse (AMD-powered custom desktop)

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 3700X | GPU: MSI X Trio GeForce RTX 2070S | RAM: XPG Spectrix D60G 32GB DDR4-3200 | Storage: 512GB XPG SX8200P + 2TB 7200RPM Seagate Barracuda Compute | OS: Microsoft Windows 10 Pro

The Portable Workstation (Apple MacBook Pro 16" 2021)

SoC: Apple M1 Max (8+2 core CPU w/ 32-core GPU) | RAM: 32GB unified LPDDR5 | Storage: 1TB PCIe Gen4 SSD | OS: macOS Monterey

The Communicator (Apple iPhone 13 Pro)

SoC: Apple A15 Bionic | RAM: 6GB LPDDR4X | Storage: 128GB internal w/ NVMe controller | Display: 6.1" 2532x1170 "Super Retina XDR" OLED with VRR at up to 120Hz | OS: iOS 15.1

Well see thats perfect for me. Ive been on Custom ROMs on my OP2 for the past 2 years. Currently running Carbon ROM based on the latest 8.1 Oreo. Great OS, tons of features, only issue is that it seems to drain more battery life. It is very nice to have Viper4Android effects though :).

Ill probably try out the new Oxygen OS for the first few months on the OP6 (If its what I end up getting) and then maybe get a custom ROM after they have had time to develop and become stable. Its been so long since Ive used the factory OS that I cant even remember what it is like, but most reviews call it "nearly" stock Android, which is something I do appreciate. I cant stand the likes of all the Samsung Bloatware and resource-draining Touchwiz.

Well, it’s close to stock but has some additions.

Personally, I’d just slap custom. OxygenOS is getting better but I’m still hearing of some little niggles here and there that just add up.

Ah, well OnePlus doesnt have the most experience with software design so I suppose that is to be expected.
