i use a HP EliteBook Folio 9470m that's 6 years old as my main laptop, and it has 1 big issue.

it jumps from 45 to 55 degrees (celsius) in seconds if i open an application, and it goes up to 70 if windows is updating or something else uses the cpu for a long time.

i think the thermal paste is the problem, because it has no dust in it (i cleaned the cooling system 2 weeks ago),

and the intake on the bottom is getting more than enough air because i replaced the rubber feet at the bottom for bigger one's so it now sits almost a centimeter from the ground.

(it had 3 missing rubber feet, and before i replaced them the idle temp was 55 degrees, now 45, so that did make a difference)

i don't know what is the best thermal paste, and don't care if it's a little overkill, i think this laptop will be in use for at least a few years still.

and i don't know how much i need etc.

Off topic, but I'm getting one in a few days, are there any common issues or anything I should be aware of with these Folios?

On topic, even something simple like Arctic Silver MX-4 will work, or if you have some left over from an aftermarket CPU cooler, that would work as well.

It's normal to heat up quickly, and 70C max temp under load doesn't sound all that bad to me.

If you still want to go through with it, all quality thermal pastes perform within a degree or so of each other, so doesn't really matter.

Does you mum know you're here?

it's not the cpu temperature itself really, but it gets so hot to the touch that it's scary.

and i do have a much newer laptop with a core i5 7200U but that doesn't heat up quickly at all..

Arctic MX-4 or AS5? MX-4 isn't recommended in laptops because it will dry out quickly.
