Hey,

so this may seem like quite the silly question, but here goes!

The IT firm that I work for also deals in Hard Drive Destruction for one of our clients; recently this client provided us with about 300+ hard drives to destroy. My question is, what would be the most efficient way to destroy the Data (whether drilling a hole thru the drive or some other means?)

We used to drill a hole straight through the drive and that was it, unfortunately the machine we used to do this is broken and has yet to be replaced. Most of these drives are failing and or dead (but the client still wants the process done.)

SO if anyone has an tips or solutions please let me know!

Thanks!

Rent a hammer drill (for use in hammer only mode) or an electric jackhammer and use that to destroy the drives

You can send it for shredding if you want to ensure it’s completely gone. A simple but effective method I’ve seen is an arbor press with a steel point to pierce the case and the platters.

You would have chain of custody issues unless you were doing the shooting (and still would unless you were the one setting them up as targets).

If you send it out for shredding, again, you might have chain of custody issues, depending on who you farm it out to and the procedure used.

I think if he wants to destroy hard drives he has something to hide, prob a criminal lol. Jokes aside, go on a gun range and pile the hard drives and throw several grenades

That's a bit more expensive than a sledgehammer.

get a nice sledgehammer and a metal spike or a drill press

You could then drive the spike through the drives or just smash them to pieces.

Or just drill through them with a 1 or 1.5 in bit and that should be the end.
