Hi. Recently my Corsair H100i V2 AIO liquid cooler died. I want to move to air cooling with a heatsink and fan setup, but don't know what's the best one to get. I have plenty of room in my case for a cooler.

My CPU is the Intel Core i7-7820X. Thanks. If you're wondering my case is a Lian-Li PC-D600. I'd like to get more of a "performance" cooler rather than something that's quiet. Edit: I don't overclock.

Living Room: HTPC (M1 Mac Mini 8/256) HiFi (Furman Elite-15 PFi > Cambridge 851N > Emotiva A300 > Focal Chora 826) Display (65-inch LG Oled, 22-inch Dell)

Office: Workstation (AMD 3900X, RX5700XT, 32GB) Headphones (Cambridge DacMagic+ > Schiit Lyr 3 > DT 990. 2 Sonos One in Stereo) Display (32-inch Gigabyte)

The Freezer 13 comes with a 92mm fan. The MasterFan Pro is at least 120mm, lower rpm, and would probably perform worse and need some ghetto form of mounting like zipties.

@lttUser1234 Is the H100i v2 under warranty? Have you considered contacting Corsair for an RMA?

The Arctic 33 mentioned by @xriqn is indeed a great cooler for how small it is, surpassing even some larger air towers in cooling performance.

However, a 7820X? Thats a VERY toasty CPU, even at stock speeds. A large twin tower with 140mm fans is far more recommended as long as your case is large enough.

My two favorite recommendations are the Be Quiet Dark Rock Pro 3 and the Cryorig R1 Universal/Ultimate. The Dark Rock Pro 3 is best in its class at cooling while also being quiet, and is smaller than the Cryorig, giving a wider range of compatibility.

Meanwhile, the Cryorig R1's are top-tier CPU air coolers, they are the kings of "Woosh", and will get you the absolute best possible temps. However, the negative is of course that they are massive, requiring a full 170mm CPU cooler height clearance. This makes compatibility more difficult. However, the R1's are so powerful that with decent thermal compound and good airflow, the cooling performance will actually surpass your H100i, in fact by a noticeable amount.

The good news is: your Lian Li case is MASSIVE, and you can fit pretty much any cooler on the market in it. I would recommend the Cryorig R1 Ultimate, unless you need clearance for taller RAM, in which case, the R1 Universal is designed to not interfere with RAM slots. It pushes the fin array further back and uses a slim edition front fan.

Hey man thanks for the recommendation. I just bought a R1 Ultimate off of eBay. I have a question though. I looked at the installation manual and there is a backplate used along with metal pieces to secure the structure to the CPU mounting screws.

If I use a Skylake X and have a socket 2066 do I need to remove my backplate and use the Cryorig backplate? I'm confused. I don't know if the MSI motherboard I have has a removable backplate I think it might be permanently secured meaning my X299 motherboard.

The R1 Ultimate uses the included motherboard backplate for installation on 2066.
