Out of ideas for current setup

Yoola

I'm running out of ideas for upgrades in my setup. Not interested in making big platform change yet (until Cannon Lake & Turing is out).

Also, this is student dorm so any hard modifications like drilling a hole in the table for cable management isn't permitted :|

I'm more function over form kind of guy, so RGB and all thaz jazz comes later, maybe.

I was thinking of sound dampening the inside of case but I heard it's not doing much in noise department.

If you have LITERALLY ANY suggestion, don't hesitate to say it here.

Can't do nothing be an option? save money for an i7 9700k + GTX 2080 and be happy with the most powerful mainstream setup possible by the end of this year.

Well kind of yeah. But I probably won't take 9700k if it won't be soldered and it's most likely 1180 instead of 2080 :D

It's just the itch for tinkering with setup that's bothering me right now.

It already is confirmed it's 2080 and Intel does not solder CPUs any more, I don't particularly see what's the issue with it, being a new 10nm processor you won't find better efficiency on AMD's side.

The only thing that comes out in my head would be ditch those displays for an ultrawide.

I would get another atleast 500gb ssd for storing games to boost the loading times. Something from Crucial mx500 or samsung evo 850. Just wait for new things to come as it was said above. And then clean up those shelves or get rid of them and buy longer table. Maybe even new case with tg? Case and storage can be easily reused in future builds.

I would get a bigger SSD now and save up for a platform upgrade.

Maybe Ryzen 2 in a year? They should do a die shrink to 7nm and, even though we cannot know how good it will perform, it should have a bigger performance leap than Ryzen (14nm) > Ryzen+ (12nm) (which was still a really good performance increase from benchmarks - not only due to the die shrink but also thanks to improvements to infinity fabric latency etc.).

Else, you could wait for Cannon Lake as you said, but I do not think Intel is going to grant your wish of soldered CPUs.

From your setup (C920 Logitech Webcam, and Blue Yeti mic) I can tell you are streaming, so AMD would be a sensible choice anyway. Even though Intel is already doing well (if not better) with the 8700k in gaming+streaming (still not good value for the money if you ask me).

For what concerns the GPU, if you are happy with the 1070 I would wait until 7nm comes out for GPUs as well (Navi for AMD, and not sure what name for NVIDIA, but it would be the 3080). I always prefer and advise to upgrade every other generation release to make the most out of your purchase, without having to run on outdated hardware. If you want more juice then definitely save up for the 2080 and go for it :).

That might be an option, even though I'm not lacking any storage space for my personal use. That small fan isn't audible at all. However, the GPU does coil whine when outputting insane amount of fps in some scenes. Forcing vsync in those games helps.

Hmmm, quite sure it's not confirmed. All leaks so far indicate 11XX. It's also only logical scheme as they've been increasing in 100 increments every generation.

The Dell screen is quite new. I might replace 2nd display with same size 1440p 60Hz screen. But that's a lot of money for little actual improvement xD

The shelf and the table is student dorm's equipment. Wouldn't be practical and/or possible to change anything here in that regard.

There's a lot of color missmatch in the case, wouldn't TG do me harm then? :D

You got everything right here.

Just wondering, why is everyone almost sure Intel won't solder CPU's anymore? :o

Because Intel has a dominant position in the CPU market and they can allow themeselves to cut corners without harming their market share. Their brand is too strong and people can close an eye on whether the IHS is soldered to the CPU or not.

(Also many people do not even know that they do not solder it, or even know what the difference is).
