Transferring OS to boot drive.

McMitch

So I have a 500GB hard drive (Which is pretty much full) and I am thinking of buying a 2TB hard drive + a 120GB SSD for my boot drive and some other applications.

How would I go about transferring just my OS to the SSD and everything else to my new hard drive?

Thanks.

There are plenty of OS cloning software you can use to transfer your OS over to another drive.

Here are a few examples:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/freeghost/

http://clonezilla.org/

Will that clone JUST my OS, or can I select what I want it to copy.

I think what he meant was he wants to copy Windows to his 120gb SSD and his programs etc to his 2TB.

If I am correct it cannot be done. the cloning software will do a sector by sector copy and as such will need an SSD larger than 500gb. There is no way to specifiy what part of the image goes on what disk.

The only thing you can do is install windows on your SSD ( and you should do this anyway as windows optimizes during install for an SSD ). plug in your 2TB, 500GB. Copy your personal files over to the 2TB and you can also move the user file folder from your SSD to the 2TB but you cannot move anything else. Programs cannot be moved from your 500GB to the 2TB or SSD. it just cant be done that way.

^This right here, I slightly misunderstood the question.

  • 2 weeks later...

I have been reading through this, and it says that all of the programs on my drive won't work, is that true and if so will it affect my steam games (That is most of my storage).
