A pickaxe would be faster than a harddisk, though.

The biggest reason people use SSDs is for rigs that don't run 24/7. Time wasted booting the system on a slow harddisk is wasted money. It adds up over time. The actual mining should be unaffected.

Alright, I’m doing it mainly just to have some experience in the field. It’s not a dedicated setup, I’m using 1 rx 480. It’s a gaming rig and I won’t be mining 24/7.

not to mention debugging issues on mining rigs usually means lots of reboots because it's all PCIe devices...

If every reboot takes 3-5 mins and you need 50 reboots to solve a problem... what could be an hour of work literally turns into a 4 hour job.

Ah, I might just run it on my regular os then and avoid that hassle. How much will background apps affect mining performance?

Shouldn’t be much. Depends on what they are

if it’s just the usual little things everyone has it’ll be fine

Things like afterburner, discord, steam. It’s a gaming rig so stuff like that. I could always shut them off too.
