Looking for budget-ish phone

Looking for a phone for a friend. Budget will be around 4000 Norwegian Kroners or NOK. Can stretch to 5000 or above if it is worth it. The phone should have a long support life, prefferably within the Android One program or similar.

 

No edge to edge displays, and not go above 6 inches in size. Should have something to grip onto around the edges so there wont be accidental touches like you would have on say the Iphone X or the S8.

Edit:Had a look at the samsung Galaxy A5. Is it worth it with a sd card, ive heard they have pretty short software support

 

EDIT 2: it also needs to survive a ludicrous amount lf dirt and other substances like water and oil. Waterproofing would be nice, that is why i mentioned the A5

Most android phones have a very short support time. They only get two to sometimes three updates. Then they get outdated.

What about the Android one program or whatever it is called. Nokia is a part of it (i think)

Not having the latest Android version doesn't make the phone outdated. Most apps still works just fine on Jelly Bean (2012) or KitKat(2013).

As far as phone recommendations go (I am not familiar with Android One so thease are not Android One phones. However, as stated by others, you do not need to have the latest updates. In fact - if your happy with a little modding you can have an older phone running the latest version of Android - I have a spare Galaxy S4 that runs quite well on Oreo, yet support was dropped for it in Lollipop. 

 

Sony's line of phones are brilliant. They have their compact series, which crams everything in the normal model into a tiny chassis if you want a truly small phone. All of their phones come with waterproofing as stock too. (other than the Xperia X & Xperia X compact, which Do NOT have waterproofing, but other than that is a great phone)

 

I'd go for Xperia X / X compact or a second hand original Xperia XZ

 

Motorola have a decent range of budget phones but my most recent escapade with them was through the Moto X Style, which for the money is great. Has some cool customization options and has a decent set of specs, but is slightly outdated.

 

LG have a decent range of budget phones too.

The phone is expected to be used at least 5 years. The device need to be functional untill then and not bricked

I'm not sure how those prices compare to what I'm used to with exchange rates and tax, but I'm basing it around the Samsung Galaxy A series.

I would point you to the Nokia 6 2018 (I think they're calling it 6.1) since that's part of Android One which means 2 years of feature updates and 3 years of security patches.

 

Avoid low-tier phones from Samsung and LG. Huawei make nice phones but tend to add a lot of unneeded apps. I have a grudge against Lenovo's Moto phones (Moto G etc) because they're getting much worse with updates.

5 years is pretty long time for a smartphone. My secondary phone (Nexus 5) is a little over 4 years old and it's still pretty fast phone but the battery is almost completely dead.
